Okkervil River – Seven Year Ache

In December of 2013 Okkervil River‘s mastermind Will Sheff funded a short film inspired by the song “Down Down the Deep River” from their lp The Silver Gymnasium. It was the centerpiece of the album and recounts Sheff’s childhood growing up in the very small town of Meriden New Hampshire during the 1980s.

“I wanted to make a short film to dramatize the song and pay homage to children’s science fiction and fantasy adventure films like ‘The Goonies’ and ‘E.T.’ that influenced me as a child”. The dreamlike, 35-minute, nostalgic film uses local actors and features cinematography from Johnny North and production design by Alan Lampert.

Two month’s after the the release of The Silver Gymnasium, the band released a third installment of their Golden Opportunities series featuring an assortment of cover songs. Sheff tried his hand at five tunes dating back to the 1980s including “The End of Innocence” by Don Henley, Cyndi Lauper’s “Money Changes Everything”, “Dance Hall Days” by Wang Chung and this week’s top tune, a sublime take on “Seven Year Ache” by Rosanne Cash.

Okkervil River released their eighth full-length album, Away, in September of 2016 on ATO Records. The album features contributions from Marissa Nadler, Jonathan Meiburg and members of the classical group yMusic. Click HERE for news and upcoming tour dates!
