And still my shadow is waiting for you
like it always used to
Hanging around and looking behind me
so that you can find me
In the eastern light
On this week’s Top Tune, Tift Merritt accompanied by Sam Beam of Iron & Wine, delivers a gorgeous and haunting elegy to a failed relationship. It’s one of our faves on Merritt’s most recent album Stitch of the World which features the best of the best; Jay Bellerose on drums, Jennifer Condos on bass, Eric Heywood on pedal steel, and Marc Ribot on guitar.
“This album will be on many year-end lists come December” – Exclaim.

No one will be denied on my boat, on my boat
No getting ahead or falling behind on my boat, on my boat
Just having a real big time on my boat on my boat
No one will be denied on my boat, on my boat, on my boat
On her new album Stitch of the World, Tift Merritt adapts the lyrics of this week’s stunner of a top tune from the late, great short-story writer Raymond Carver. His poem “My Boat” was written in Port Angeles in the spring of 1984. There will be room for all his friends on this boat, no one will be denied. With Carver’s All of Us: The Collected Poems in hand, this poem for Tift “leapt up like lightning”. Its message of kinship and inclusion is offered in a time of great division in our country and “it makes it just a little bit easier to believe that scars do heal and love soldiers on”. – Slant Magazine.
Check out a lovely intimate performance of the song at Paste Studios in NYC with mister Eric Heywood on guitar HERE.
