As far as top tier musical theater pedigree goes, it would be hard to beat the combined talents of Neil Simon, Cy Coleman, and Bob Fosse. When you add in lyrics by Carolyn Leigh and the comedic chops of the great Sid Caesar, you get the hilarious 1962 Tony-award winning classic, Little Me. This week’s Top Tune is perhaps the funniest, most unflinchingly honest ode to undying love there ever was.
Neil Simon had worked with Caesar during the 1950′s on Your Show of Shows which TV Guide calls “one of the greatest television shows of all-time”. The chance to team up again with Sid and to work with with Bob Fosse drew Simon to the project. “With the exception of Jerome Robbins, for my money Fosse was the best choreographer who ever worked in the theater.” wrote Simon in his memoir, Rewrites: A Memoir. Simon, Fosse and Coleman would reunite for another smash hit musical, the iconic Sweet Charity in 1966.
Little Me’s latest revival will star Tony-award winner, Christian Borle (Smash, Angels in America, Legally Blonde) who will play the multiple roles of Belle Poitrine’s husbands and lovers and the great Rachel York (City of Angeles, Les Miserables) will star as Belle. You can catch it all February 5-9, Encores! at NY City Center.
