City of Angels (1990 Original B’way Cast) – Double Talk Walk

(click song title above to listen)

On Friday December 5th, London’s Award-winning outfit Donmar Warehouse will revive Cy Coleman, David Zippel, and Larry Gelbart’s six time Tony-award winning musical City of Angels. The production will run through February 7, 2015 and features a star-studded cast including: Rosalie Craig (Ragtime, Lord of the Rings), Hadley Fraser (The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables) and Samantha Barks (I’d Do Anything, Les Miserables), with direction by Josie Rourke. For fix & info click HERE.

The critics called the show “brilliantly original”, “chills-up-your-spine inventive” (Joel Siegel/ABC TV), and “the funniest musical since Bye Bye Birdie” (Frank Rich/NY Times,) when it opened at the Virginia Theatre on December 11, 1989 and closed two years later after playing 878 performances. Using as its template the film noirs in which Humphrey Bogart played a hard-boiled gumshoe, City of Angels won Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score among others. The book is by Larry Gelbart (Oh, God!, M*A*S*H, Tootsie), with lyrics by David Zippel (The Goodbye Girl, Princesses), and an amazing jazz score by Cy Coleman (Little Me, Sweet Charity, On the Twentieth Century),

Set in Hollywood in the 1940s with two stories occurring simultaneously, the cast featured James Naughton and Gregg Edelman with Randy Graff, Dee Hoty and Kay McCelland as their love interests and Rene Auberjonois as the Hollywood mogul. The musical later opened in London’s West End at the Prince of Wales Theatre in March 1993 and ran through November ( winning the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical) with the accomplished Michael Blakemore again as director. The show’s big musical numbers include “You Can Always Count on Me”, “The Tennis Song”, and the stunning ballad, “With Every Breath I Take”. This week we focus on Double Talk Walk which highlights one of Coleman’s many unique contributions to musical theater; a truly original jazz score.

Catch it if you can!
