Musiq Soulchild – Just Friends (Sunny)

(click song title above to listen)

Musiq Soulchild has often cited such icons as Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Sly & the Family Stone and Ray Charles as his musical mentors, so it was no surprise when he used Bobby Hebb‘s iconic “Sunny” as the backbone of one of his biggest hits: “Just Friends (Sunny).

The tune made the Top 10 on the R&B Billboard singles chart, as well as making Top 40 of the mag’s Pop single rankings. In his career, Soulchild has had two platinum albums, four gold albums and seven hit singles, as well as amassing an impressive 11 Grammy nominations.

“Just Friends (Sunny)” was covered by none other than Prince on his 2002 release One Nite Alone: Live and was the inspiration for two recent & potent interpolations in Kehlani‘s “Down For You” ft. BJ The Chicago Kid and Wale‘s “The Need to Know” ft. SZA.

Wale – The Need To Know ft. SZA

(click song title above to listen)

One year ago today, D.C. rapper Wale dropped the first single from his fourth studio album, The Album About Nothing on Maybach/Atlantic Records. A continuation of Wale’s Seinfeld-themed mixtape series, the album would go on to debut at number one on the Billboard Top 200 chart. The mag described the album as his “most personal piece of work to date, and also his best”.

Wale creates a poignant commentary on his existence throughout the album with those of (friend & fan) Jerry Seinfeld, acting as narrator, doing the same. Listening to “The Need To Know” takes you back to Seinfeld episode ‘The Deal’ (Season 2, Ep.9) where Jerry & Elaine try and resume just the sex part of their past relationship without ruining the friendship. Wale can relate. Can you dig the killer guest vocal by SZA inspired by the great 2000 hit single, “Just Friends (Sunny)” by Musiq Soulchild? We know that you can!

Kehlani (feat. BJ The Chicago Kid) – Down For You

(click song title above to listen)

This week’s Top Tune comes from a young Oakland-based star on the rise, the mighty Kehlani and her new mixtape, You Should Be Here. Released last week on iTunes, Billboard calls it “2015′s First Great R&B Album”. The song debuted at #1 on the Billboard Twitter Emerging Artist Chart and the album is the current reigning #1 set on the iTunes R&B Chart.

Kehlani’s version coincides with the 15th anniversary of the cut that inspired it, Musiq Soulchild‘s “Just Friends (Sunny)” from his 2000 hit debut album, Aijuswanaseing. Influenced by Lauryn Hill, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and India Arie, it’s no wonder Kehlani gravitated toward Musiq Soulchild’s soulful take on Bobby Hebb‘s “Sunny” for her new single. The ambitious, self-assured new album follows up her excellent 2014 mixtape Cloud 19 and displays explosive vocal ability. Only 20 years old, Kehlani turns many intense personal life experiences into soulful & universally hopeful messages. Read more about Kehlani in Fader Magazine HERE.

Our favorite tracks include “The Letter” and the killer ballad “Bright”, but it’s “Down For You” with a strong guest vocal from BJ The Chicago Kid that seals the deal.

Musiq Soulchild’s “Just Friends (Sunny)” is everywhere it seems, his great cut also informs Wale‘s new track “The Need to Know” feat. SZA from his #1 album, The Album About Nothing out now on Atlantic Records. Listen to Wale’s excellent take HERE. Last but not least, you can let Prince show you a thing or two about how to play a proper guitar solo to the song w/Musiq Soulchild HERE.
