Chico Mann – Illusión de Ti

(click song title above to listen)

This week’s Top Tune, a sly nod to the genre of freestyle (the underground Latin dance music of the ’80s), never fails to ignite a fire at live performances. “Illusión de Ti” comes from the brilliant 2010 Chico Mann lp Analog Drift from our pals at Wax Poetics Records.

Born in New York City, Marcos Garcia was immersed in not only the electro beats of New York and Miami, but also the rich musical tradition of Cuba that courses through his veins. Proficient on guitar and keyboards, Garcia found a new groove when he co-founded Brooklyn-based Afrobeat band Antibalas. As Chico Mann, he assembles all of his influences into a tight, fresh fusion. “I’m employing several dialects to make a larger musical statement,” he says. “They’re all branches of the same tree.”

Come down Wed Jan 13th to the Short Stop in Los Angeles to hear him spin some of those influences you’ve never heard before!

Chico Mann – One Day Late

This week’s Top Tune comes from songwriter, producer, remixer, guitar player and all-around champion of good sounds and good vibes, Marcos J. Garcia. Raised in NYC’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood to Cuban-born parents, Marcos from a young age was soaked in the sounds of afro beat, Latin jazz and 80′s freestyle. Marcos is best known as a founding and current member of Brooklyn-based afrobeat ensemble Antibalas, which is modeled after Fela Kut’s Africa 70 band and Eddie Palmieri’s Harlem River Drive Orchestra.

It was around 2006 that Marcos created the musical time machine that has become Chico Mann. Blending 1970′s Afrobeat and 1980′s Freestyle and Afro Cuban music while paving the way for something new. “One Day Late” was written by Notable’s own, Sam Phillips, and appears on one of our favorite records of the year, Chico Mann’s Magical Thinking. Kudos! to our own Jeremy Page for the mix.

You can catch Marcos and Antibalas on tour here:

Kendra Morris – Waiting

Often compared to such contemporaries as Alice Smith, Mayer Hawthorne, Alice Russell and Leela James, Kendra Morris is deeply rooted in the great soul and funk of the late-60′s and early-70′s. Her vocal power beautiful, her artistry ever-evolving. This week’s top tune got the party started as the lead-off track on her 2012 debut lp Banshee on Wax Poetics Records.

Look for her followup lp, Mockingbird on July 30th. This all-covers affair will take you on a ride through classics by David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, The Rolling Stones and more. She and her collaborator and producer Jeremy Page put their sweet and soulful stamp throughout. Check out this feature from The Wall Street Journal with a clip of Kendra’s version of Radiohead’s “Karma Police”.
