Skating Polly – Blue Obvious

(click song title above to listen)

This week we flash back to the first Skating Polly song we fell in love with, “Blue Obvious” from 2013′s Lost Wonderfuls. Teenage multi-instrumentalists step sisters Peyton Bighorse & Kelli Mayo “each possess wonderfully unique yet complimentary voices and viewpoints. Spector-scope reverb (courtesy of producer, Exene Cervenka!) gives these defiantly lo-fi mediations on bad friends, boys, parents, afterlife, and activism an appropriately grand feel” – Tom Tom Magazine

Could not have said it better! As you probably know by now, they have a knack of pulling off amazing videos for their songs and this one is no exception. You can check it out HERE!

Skating Polly have been busy putting the finishing touches on a new album between tours with the likes of Babes in Toyland & L7. Don’t miss out on their upcoming Riot Fest appearances in Denver & Chicago featuring Pixies, Snoop Dog, Modest Mouse, Coheed And Cambria, Alkaline Trio, & many many more.

Skating Polly – Blunderland

(click song title above to listen)

The members of Skating Polly routinely pull double duty, often swapping turns at lead vocals and instruments throughout their stellar third lp Fuzz Steilacoom and in their kinetic live shows. On this week’s Top Tune, it’s drummer Peyton Bighorse’s turn singing lead on one of our favorite tracks from the record, Blunderland. Her moving vocal in the distance erupts into something larger and more powerful, the song is always a stunner live. Peyton and Kelli recently spoke to one of their heroes (friend and fellow drummer) Kliph Scurlock of The Flaming Lips in this month’s Tom Tom Magazine:

Kliph: “So, what are some of your favorite sounding records that you will be using as inspiration or a litmus test?” Peyton: “I draw inspiration a lot from Elliott Smith and Neutral Milk Hotel and Perfume Genius. I try to do my vocals in a similar way in the sense that all three of them are very sincere and it really shows in their music.”

Speaking of musical heroes, the girls were invited by John Doe of X to be the opening act for The Flesh Eaters reunion tour which kicks off tomorrow night at The Observatory in Santa Ana. It will be the first shows in nine years from the legendary L.A. punk band which was formed in 1977 by Slash Magazine writer and Slash Records A&R man Chris Desjardins. The band features a supergroup of musicians including members of X, The Blasters and Los Lobos, the same line-up who appear on the recently reissued and critically acclaimed 1981 lp A Minute to Pray, A Second to Die. Look for Skating Polly to debut some new songs, not to be missed!

Formed in 1977 by founding punk poet Chris Desjardins (Chris D.), The Flesh Eaters with varying line-ups put out 12 albums between 1977 and 2004. The most critically acclaimed of the bunch was the one-time “supergroup” who played on the second LP, A Minute to Pray, A Second to Die. Released in 1981, the line-up comprised some of the best musicians of the genre and the era including Chris D. on vocals, John Doe (of X) on bass, Dave Alvin (of The Blasters) on guitar, Bill Bateman (of the Blasters) on drums, DJ Bonebrake (of X) on marimbas and Steve Berlin (of Top Jimmy and the Rhythm Pigs and Los Lobos) on sax. Receiving rave reviews from publications as diverse as The New York Times, New York Rocker, Downbeat, their unique style featured a cornucopia of influences from garage band punk to blues to jazz.

The Flesh Eaters reunited in 2006 at the request of Mudhoney to play All Tomorrow’s Parties fest in southern England and three shows in California. Nine years later the line-up has gotten back together, Skating Polly will open. Not to be missed:

Jan 10 - Echoplex Los Angeles
Jan 11 The Casbah San Diego
