And still my shadow is waiting for you
like it always used to
Hanging around and looking behind me
so that you can find me
In the eastern light
On this week’s Top Tune, Tift Merritt accompanied by Sam Beam of Iron & Wine, delivers a gorgeous and haunting elegy to a failed relationship. It’s one of our faves on Merritt’s most recent album Stitch of the World which features the best of the best; Jay Bellerose on drums, Jennifer Condos on bass, Eric Heywood on pedal steel, and Marc Ribot on guitar.
“This album will be on many year-end lists come December” – Exclaim.

Grammy-nominated artist Tift Merritt to release new album Stitch of the World on January 27th, 2017 via Yep Roc Records! Stitch of the World, Merritt’s sixth studio album, was written on a friend’s farm in Marfa, Texas, at Merritt’s California cabin and in New York City in the wake of several major changes in her life.
Merritt workshopped the songs on Stitch of the World with longtime friend Sam Beam of Iron & Wine after bumping in to him in an airport. The album was recorded in Los Angeles while Merritt was six months pregnant, after which she relocated to her hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina. Pre-order HERE!

Bramble Rose, the debut album by Tift Merritt, celebrated its 14 year anniversary last month with a recently released deluxe limited vinyl edition. Don Henley recalls of its title track, “I’d wanted to record that song ever since I heard it!”. Henley followed through with that desire when it became the stunning lead-off track on his #1 2015 country album, Cass County featuring guest vocalists Miranda Lambert and Mick Jagger.
This week’s Top Tune “Virginia, No One Can Warn You” is another beauty from that album. American Songwriter exclaimed, “A clever one-shot video and production from Ethan Johns, “Virginia, No One Can Warn You” seems to be an artful way of one person realizing that some lessons just have to be learned the hard way.” In any case continues American Songwriter, “it’s a fine display of Merritt’s talent as a songwriter and performer and an example of how a sublime early song can sometimes set the table for an entire career”. Hear, Hear!
