Barbra Streisand – You Wanna Bet

With more than 140 million records sold worldwide, Barbra Streisand is one of the best selling female recording artists of all time. In the U.S. alone, she exceeds all other female singers and all other recording artists other than Elvis Presley with 51 gold and 30 platinum albums.

Those are astounding numbers from this legendary performer from Brooklyn who began her career on stage in 1961 and as a recording artist in 1963.

Columbia Records held the rights to the original cast album of the Broadway musical Sweet Charity, written by Cy Coleman & Dorothy Fields & starring Gwen Verdon. In order to publicize the show’s music, Columbia asked its recording artists at the top of 1966 to release single versions of the songs from the score.

Recorded at Columbia Recording Studio A in NYC, “You Wanna Bet” was released that January as a 7-inch single, the flip side to “Where Am I Going?” (also from Sweet Charity). Although “You Wanna Bet” was eventually cut from the show, both tracks scored Top 20 positions on Billboard’s AC chart as the Broadway musical opened to much critical acclaim and commercial success. This version was only available as a 7-inch single for many years until it was included on the Barbra Streisand, Just For The Record retrospective box set in 1991. We hope you enjoy this rare track from one of the most beautiful voices ever recorded.
