Brooklyn-based afrobeat band Antibalas have performed in over 35 countries, from Japan to Turkey, to Portugal and Brazil. They’ve appeared throughout New York City; from Carnegie Hall & The Apollo Theater, to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, the Central Park Summerstage and Rikers Island prison facility. They have shared the stage with artists as diverse as The Roots, Alabama Shakes and Arcade Fire. Their driving drums, guitar rhythms, and horns showcase eclectic & soulful links between afro-cuban music, aftrobeat, and Latin freestyle.
This week’s Top Tune is “War Hero” and was co-written by Notable’s Marcos Garcia (aka Chico Mann) who is a co-founding member-guitarist and vocalist in the group. The song appears on the ensembles’ critically acclaimed fourth album, Security for the ANTI- label in 2007 and was produced by John McEntire drummer/multi-instrumentalist member of Tortoise and The Sea and Cake. A burning funky track throughout.
Antibalas are not just funky, they are cut from the Fela Kuti mold, politically savvy and socially conscious. Co-founding Band member Martin Perna told The Nation after a concert around this time: “Afrobeat as our musical architecture is connected to political struggle. And we’re not just talking about political struggle in our context, as a multicultural, multiracial band from Brooklyn, New York. We have songs about patriarchy, about military myths, and we have songs about the need to really overhaul our representative democracy…”
Listen to the Antibalas horns light up a track on Mark Ronson‘s new album, Uptown Special available this week and you can catch the group across the U.S. on a five week tour beginning Jan 21 with world renowned veteran female vocal ensemble, Zap Mama. Click HERE for more info.
