Top Tune of the Week
Jenny O. - Lazy Jane
Our favorite jam on Jenny O.’s album, Automechanic is this week’s pining and poignant stunner, “Lazy Jane”. Produced by Jonathan Wilson (Father John Misty, Dawes) in Los Angeles and recorded on toasty 2″ tape, our Jenny, Jonathan and drummer James Gadson (of Bill Withers fame) got in a room and pushed ‘record’. We do give thanks!
If you didn’t catch Jenny O. and her band on the 15 date tour with Rodriguez, you will get another chance May 25 – July 1 supporting Night Beds. Cities include Knoxville, TN, Evanston, IL, Austin, TX, Atlanta, GA, Detroit, MI, Brooklyn, NY and many points in-between. Jenny O. will cap it off by headlining Mercury Lounge NYC on July 2nd.
But we’re jumping ahead, if you’re in Nashville on May 23rd please bust a move on over to her 6p in-store appearance at one of the great record shops, Grimey’s.!. You can peep the new video for “Automechanic” HERE.

Chico Mann - Magic Touch
This week’s Top Tune features a song getting much love on the playlist of Santa Monica CA’s KCRW these past few weeks- Chico Mann‘s “Magic Touch”. This song brings the funk to Jersey City, NJ-based Marcos Garcia’s (aka Chico Mann) new album, Magical Thinking. An album we can’t stop spinning.
Thom Jurek from Allmusic Guide sums it up this way:
“While Mann’s inspirations clearly lie in the musical past, and his greatest skill as both a composer and producer is finding new ways of combining familiar elements, each of these cuts carries his own distinctive fingerprint, making the album a solid groover, top to bottom”. Amen!

Sam Phillips - Things I Shouldn't Have Told You

Sarah Vaughan - On the Other Side of the Tracks
Sass developed her musical chops along side the seminal figures of jazz. Starting out singing in bands with Earl Hines and Billy Eckstine, Vaughan helped put 52nd street (Swing Street) on the map. Her band mates included giants Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charlie Parker. She enjoyed two successful decades on Mercury Records during the 50′s and 60′s including one final set for the label, Sassy Swings Again in 1967.
On this album, Sarah joins an all-star band including the likes of Clark Terry, Freddie Hubbard, Phil Woods, and Benny Golson on this week’s Top Tune: Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh‘s “On the Other Side of the Tracks”. The performances and album, which was awarded four stars by Stephen Cook, are described as an essential session during her “autumnal prime”. This song was cleverly plucked from the hit musical, Little Me, a Cy Coleman/Carolyn Leigh tuner from 1962 which starred Sid Caesar and received 10 Tony nominations. The musical has been seen many award-winning revivals since it’s Broadway debut, you can catch the latest incarnation starting today May 1 and running through May 19 at the Eureka Theatre, San Francisco starring Jason Graae.

Rosanne Cash, Elvis Costello, Kris Kristofferson - April 5th
You want love
But it’s never deep enough
You want life
But it’s never long enough
You want peace
Like it’s something you can buy
You want time
But you’re content to watch it fly
Halfway through the recording of her mighty 2006 album Black Cadillac, Rosanne Cash had written down some lyrics and tinkered with the beginnings of what would become this weeks’ Top Tune. Over time, she and her co-writer/producer-husband John (Leventhal) would streamline it both musically and lyrically. One day they got the spark to invite two special friends to contribute verse’s of their own. One (Kris) who Cash had known since childhood and one (Elvis) with whom she had recently co-written “Song With Rose” for his album, Momofuku.
Rosanne’s first verse beautifully set the tone and then the baton was masterfully handed off to Elvis and then to Kris. When they all finally found eight hours in a studio together, magic flowed. You can watch a great live performance of the song HERE.

Rosemary Clooney - The Rules of the Road
Thanks for Nothing was Rosemary Clooney‘s only album recorded for Frank Sinatra’s Reprise Records and the last full-length lp she recorded until 1977. Arguably considered the last of her great albums, this 1964 work was arranged by Bob Thompson (Duane Eddy, Van Dyke Parks, Phil Ochs) and doesn’t pull a lot of punches lyrically.
The stresses of her personal life at the time are said to be audible on many of the tracks. Her masterful delivery on the brilliant Cy Coleman/Carolyn Leigh song “The Rules of the Road” just one clear example. Our favorite characters might miss a bend in the road or two but will keep on driving. That’s how it goes, you live and you learn the rules of the road.

Chico Mann - Edge of It
“This is the future of music, in case you didn’t know. Chico Mann has come from the future to show you how the past should have sounded. This time-traveling mastermind is basically the Jersey City Cuban James Brown of the Casio. You heard it here first…Welcome to the future past.” – Turntable Lab
This week we offer up a little jam called “Edge of It” from multi-instrumenatlist and producer Marcos Garcia (aka Chico Mann). This track is one of our faves from his new lp, Magical Thinking available everywhere on April 16 via Soundway Records. Catch Marcos perform as a member of the mighty Antibalas during the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival weekend 1, curated by TV On The Radio – Camber Sands UK May 10-12 with solo dates TBA.

Alice Clark - Hard Hard Promises
This self-titled 1972 disc from Alice Clark (“The Holy Grail of Modern Soul”) has more than stood the test of time. It has been called a sublime masterpiece of R&B/pop and was produced by Bob Shad for Mainstream Records, the label he founded in 1964. Among the reissues and new material Shad released on Mainstream included artists such as Shelly Manne, Dizzy Gillespie, and Buddy Terry. Other productions by Bob Shad include the fist album by Big Brother and the Holding Company (featuring Janis Joplin) and records by Lightnin’ Hopkins, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, Sarah Vaughan, and The Amboy Dukes. Another Fun Fact: Shad’s grandson happens to be writer-director Judd Apatow.
None of the songs on Clark’s album are self-penned; all are gems from the likes of Jimmy Webb, Fred Ebb, John Kander as are three from Bobby Hebb (of “Sunny” fame) including this week’s Top Tune, “Hard Hard Promises”. Please enjoy!

Jenny O. - Dope Van Gogh
You, you make me wild
You’re a dope Van Gogh in my style
And your naked confidence is cool
But you make it awfully hard to follow
Oh, the sorrow that I’ll swallow

Tim Easton - Daily Life
This week’s Top Tune features a song from the newest edition to the Notable family, Nashville Tennessee- based singer/songwriter, Tim Easton. We’ve had the great pleasure of listening to his stories through song over time, ones that are always honest, always evolving, and always soulful. Tim has scored films, won Independent Music Awards, busked his way around the streets of the world and was recently & rightfully commemorated by a best-of-collection; Tim Easton – Before The Revolution – The Best Of 1998-2011, out now on New West Records.
“Hearing these tunes, written over several years time, brings me back to the mindset of a wondering and stubborn young man who grows up bit by bit. I can conjure him at any moment, and will do so on stage from time to time, but prefer to move forward in this world of a thousand directions” Tim explains. “I like my rock and roll to have a little porch-party in it and I like my folk music to have some distortion”. Can we hear an amen? Tim is currently putting the finishing touches on his 7th solo lp, and the 2nd lp for Easton, Stagger, Phillips. This revolution will continue to be recorded…

Original 1960 Broadway Cast - Hey Look Me Over
If you’ve ever been near a parade in your life or maybe watched Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade or The Tournament of Roses parade on TV, you’ve heard this week’s Top Tune march on by. Maybe someone you know attended the 1964 Democratic Convention or a political rally for Senator Ted Kennedy from Massachusetts. They would recognize this week’s Top Tune which was Mr. Kennedy’s official campaign for the duration of a very long distinguished career. Maybe you’ve attended an LSU Fighting Tigers football game?
Whatever the case, the ever-upbeat & hopeful sentiment of “Hey Look Me Over” is a classic of the Great American Songbook. The song made its major debut on December 16, 1960 during the opening night of Cy Coleman‘s musical, Wildcat starring Lucille Ball. The story goes that Lucy, who had begun her career as a chorus girl, had since developed serious stage fright at the prospect of singing on front of living people. So, when the show needed a signature song for Lucy to sing, Cy Coleman (and lyricist Carolyn Leigh) conjured up a song for ‘everywoman’; one that contained “something like four notes”. Lucy and Disi Arnaz invested $360,000 in the show in exchange for 36% of the net profits and the rights to the original cast recording (ultimately released by RCA Victor). The original cast recording was made on December 18, 1960 in Webster Hall, NYC. The song has since been recorded by the likes of Louis Armstrong, Judy Garland, Johnny Mathis, Peggy Lee, Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney and the list goes on and on. Please enjoy!

Chico Mann - Same Old Clown
This week’s Top Tune features the first single from Chico Mann’s upcoming lp, Magical Thinking on Soundway Records. Guitarist with the band Antibalas, multi instrumentalist, producer & remixer, Chico Mann (AKA Marcos Garcia) has in the past worked with the likes of TV On The Radio, The Roots and Dam Funk as well as remixing Little Dragon and Alice Russell among others.
Garcia’s love affair with synthesizers, drum machines, and 80′s freestyle expands the vocabulary of traditional Afrobeat in new directions which might very well be described as spacey electronic nu-merengue. Lucky for us, we’re along for the ride. With a little inspiration from a Notable Muse, Same Old Clown features our very own Kendra Morris on vocals and is available now on iTunes HERE. Kudos to Notable’s Jeremy Page for the mix!

Bettye LaVette - How Am I Different
This week’s Top Tune was written by Aimee Mann and Jon Brion and originally appeared on Mann’s third studio album, 2000′s Bachelor No. 2 or, the Last Remains of the Dodo. Aimee initially released the album on her website sans record company. It would eventually go on to achieve a worldwide release and success aided by the soundtrack album to the Paul Thomas Anderson film Magnolia, with which the album shares material.
If you happened to catch last Sunday’s episode of Girls (HBO), you heard the original version of this little gem. This week we offer up a version by the great Bettye LaVette who cut the song on her 2005 album, I’ve Got My Own Hell To Raise on Anti Records. Tift Merritt - Drifted Apart
You are child when love is born,
Can’t stay a child for long.
Maybe the good times are up ahead,
Maybe those times are gone.
Same things keeping us together
Are the very ones making it hard.
Better take a look around,
Baby, we’re drifting apart.
Tift Merritt is joined by Andrew Bird on backing vocals and violin on this week’s top tune, the stirring “Drifted Apart” from her recent lp, Traveling Alone.
It’s hard to pick just one song from this album to spotlight, the whole album which was recorded in just eight days in Brooklyn with producer Tucker Martine is a wholly beautiful work. The album released this past October on Yep Roc, is a searching, evolving and ascending collection of poetry through song. Check out this great stripped down acoustic video of the song HERE.

Frank Sinatra - Why Try To Change Me Now
“So let people wonder, let ‘em laugh, let ‘em cry”…Frank Sinatra’s second set of torch songs recorded with arranger Gordon Jenkins, No One Cares, was released on Capitol Records in 1959 in both stereo and mono versions. Jenkins who also worked with the Andrews Sisters, Johnny Cash, Louis Armstrong, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, and Ella Fitzgerald among others, captures Mr. Sinatra in a stunning & melancholy mood with Cy Coleman & Joseph McCarthy’s great ballad, “Why Try To Change Me Now”.
This timeless song has gone on to be recorded by the likes of Little Jimmy Scott, Count Basie & Sammy Davis Jr., Elvin Jones, Nancy Wilson, and Fiona Apple. Catch a special live performance from Fiona HERE.

Shirley Bassey - Big Spender
Two years after Shirley Bassey scored big with 007′s “Goldfinger” she hit the jackpot again in 1967 with “Big Spender“. A top 20 smash in her native UK, the song became one of her signature songs throughout her 60 year+ career and has been sampled and remixed numerous times.
The song was written by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields for the tony winning musical Sweet Charity, first performed in 1966 and staged by Bob Fosse and again in the 1969 film starring Shirley MacLaine, John McMartin, and Sammy Davis Jr. The most recent hit revivals include Christina Applegate who starred in the Broadway revival in 2005 and Tamzin Outhwaite who starred in London’s West End production in 2010.

Chico Mann - I Feel It (Captain Planet Remix)
Marcos Garcia (aka Chico Mann), longtime member of Antibalas, multi instrumentalist, guitarist and remixer, drops his 5th solo album Magical Thinking in March against a backdrop of pop sensibilities and guest vocalists including our very own Kendra Morris. The album draws as much on 80′s funk, boogie and electro as merengue and Afro-beat.
His most recent LP Analog Drift (2010), a KCRW favorite, was released through Wax Poetics Records. As Garcia toured throughout the US. Jon Pareles (NY Times) praised his live show’s “far-reaching electronica” that had the ability “to dissolve decades, along with borders”. “There’s a purity and a fire to Jenny O. that I find irresistible. Her almost child-like voice is an evocative counterpoint to the confidence and complexity of her music.” writes Amy Seidenwurm for Boing Boing and we couldn’t have said it better. This week’s top tune is one of our favorites from Jenny’s upcoming lp Automechanic coming Feb 5th, 2013 via her own imprint Holy Trinity Records.
Jenny’s had quite a year, she toured solo throughout the UK for the ex-U.S. release of her ep Home, and had several dates in the U.S. w/Father John Misty & Rodriguez. Billy Preston - You Can't Get To Heaven
“No, you can’t get to heaven on one amen.” sings Billy Preston. “You got to hallelujah again & again”.
Hallelujah again & again is exactly what Billy did. He starting out as a prodigy on organ and piano and by age 10 was backing up gospel diva Mahalia Jackson before lending an amen or two in studio sessions and tours with the likes of Little Richard & The Beatles. His work with The Beatles on their Let It Be album set the stage for his big break as a solo artist in the early-’70′s with soul smashes of his own for A&M Records.
In early 1995, Cy Coleman had gathered together some friends in the studio to record songs from the score of his upcoming Broadway Musical hit, The Life which would go on to be nominated for 10 Tony Awards winning 2 or Lillias White and Chuck Cooper. Joe Williams, Lou Rawls, Bobby Short and incredibly the last recorded performance by George Burns would accompany Billy on this album. Go ahead and testify fellas, again & again.

Marvin Gaye - Sunny (Mercury Edit II)
This week’s Top Tune is without a doubt one of our favorite remixes of the year – Mercury takes on Marvin Gaye’s classic recording of “Sunny” and brightens up our day.
Mercury is comprised of the Swiss duo: Mel & Simon. Their remixes for Tom Trago and Homework caught the attention of the legendary Gomma Records who signed the group in 2010. The Gomma label is a music (and graphic) collective that is based in Munich and is led by Jonas Imbery (aka Telonius) and Mathias Modica (aka Munk). The Gomma collective consists of musicians, djs, bands, and graphic designers from all over the world.
“Sunny” was written and originally recorded by Bobby Hebb and has been covered by the likes of Stevie Wonder, Toots & The Maytals, Ella Fitzgerald, The Four Seasons, James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Nick Cave, Oscar Peterson, and Dusty Springfield just to name a few. BMI rates “Sunny” number 25 in its “Top 100 songs of the 20th Century.”

Peggy Lee - When In Rome (I Do As The Romans Do)
Peggy Lee’s voluminous recorded legacy at Capitol Records was only in mid-session when she hit in 1964 with two albums, I’m In Love Again & In The Name of Love. As with many of her albums of the 1960′s, these two featured many tunes written by Peggy’s good pal Cy Coleman and this week’s Top Tune is a fine example. Barbra Streisand will also enjoy a hit with it that same year.
A few years later, Tony Bennett on a split with Columbia Records and eager to balance the demands of commerciality, teamed up with the great Bill Evans (see: Miles Davis – Kind of Blue) on a new beautiful arrangement for Fantasy Records. The Unleashed! album also features contributions from Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Grace Potter featuring The Flaming Lips and Neon Trees, plus Plain White T’s contributing a cover of the Ramones’ “Pet Sematary,” from the soundtrack to the 1989 Stephen King adaptation. Spooky goodness.

Mylo - Zenophile
This week’s Top Tune comes via Isle of Skye, Scotland bred DJ/record producer Mylo (Myles MacInnes) from his debut 2004 album Destroy Rock & Roll. A mix of twisted house, electroclash and chilled vibes, the album which reached #26 on the UK album chart and netted Mylo four Top 20 UK Club tracks and a top 10 U.S. Dance chart hit, has drawn comparisons to the work of Daft Punk, Groove Armada and Royksopp.
Growing up on Skye, one of the furthest flung corners of Europe, MacInnes couldn’t be too choosy about his sources of music. “Basically we had Atlantic 252,” he explains. “It was this kind-of soft rock station on long-wave. We all believed it to be transmitted from a boat floating out in the mid-Atlantic.” Continually on tour from club gigs to stints at Coachella and the Isle of Wedge festivals, Mylo is also in demand as a remixer, contributing remixes for artists that include Scissor Sisters, Amy Winehouse, The Killers & Kylie Minogue.

Kendra Morris - The Plunge
Kendra Morris grew up imbued with a sense of music—her parents played in bands together, and she often broke into their cabinets full of vinyl to listen to their favorite records. As Marvin Gaye, the Spinners, War, Stevie Wonder, Jackson 5, and the Temptations washed over her, they soon became hers too. She sang along to her favorite albums with a voice she discovered soon after she learned how to talk.
“I was three years old, and I got up and asked my parents’ friends if they wanted my little voice or my big voice,” Morris remembers. “And I did this little voice, but then I did this big operatic voice. Maybe that was ingrained in me, because they say some of the main parts of you develop before you’re even six years old.”
Big voice, little voice, bring it on!
Her debut lp Banshee produced by our very own Jeremy Page is available now on cd, vinyl, or digital via our friends at Wax Poetics Records. Check out the new video for POW here.

Patti Page - My How The Time Goes By
The best-selling female singer of the 1950′s, Patti Page thrived in the post-WWII pop styles of Traditional Pop, Vocal Pop, Country Pop, Nashville, and our favorite category, Countrypolitan. Born in Muskogee, OK, Patti toured the country in the late ’40′s with a band led by Jimmy Joy that ended up in Chicago where she sang in a small combo setting with Benny Goodman and landed a recording contract with Mercury in 1947.
This weeks Top Tune features Patti’s rendition in 1957 of the playful Cy Coleman & Carolyn Leigh tune, “My How The Time Goes By”. Check out the smokier live version by the great Shirly Horn HERE.
And meanwhile the moon gets yellower
And meanwhile the mood gets mellower
But by now, I should be leaving you
But somehow there ain’t no leaving you
Why? there’s that look in your eye
So I sit here and sigh, my how the time goes by

Ambrosia Parsley - Then Was Then and Now Is Now
For a decade Ambrosia Parsley provided the heart, face and voice of Shivaree, cult favorites here, left-field chart-toppers abroad. Featured in many other works by artists such as Mocean Worker’s album Enter the Mowo & Verbena’s La Musica Negra, Ambrosia delivers one of our favorite vocal performances of all time on this week’s Top Tune originally released on 2009′s The Best Is Yet To Come, The Songs of Cy Coleman.
Preparing now for her next full album project, Ambrosia offers this disclaimer: “What remains of the “music industry” six years later is no place for a working mother who writes long, dark waltzes, talks like a sailor and may have just recently completed a harrowing years-long search for the perfect pie crust recipe. I recently spent eight weeks in barber school with a very nice muslim man from Morocco and two dashing parolees who’d rather eat donuts, and all i have to show for it is an ill-fitting smock and a bunch of friends who enjoy free haircuts.” Dear, Miss Parsley, please sign us up for all of the above.

Tony Bennett - Baby Dream Your Dream
Tony Bennett’s ballad version of “For Once in My Life” was a Top 10 hit one year before Stevie Wonder made it a #2 pop smash. Released on Columbia Records in 1967, the album of the same name also featured the lovely Cy Coleman & Dorothy Fields song, “Baby Dream Your Dream” from the hit musical Sweet Charity.
This is the American Dream, served up 1960′s style with a cherry on top. A time when apparently the bank made a “friendly loan”. Wow, far out.

Antibalas - Dirty Money
Antibalas (Spanish for “bulletproof”), a Brooklyn based band modeled after Fela Kuti’s Africa 70 band and Eddie Palmieri’s Harlem River Drive Orchestra, has been steadily recording, and touring all of over the world since 1998. For those of you who have witnessed them in concert or even on Broadway blowing the roof off of the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on a nightly basis as the band (and arranger) for the production of Fela!, you know how powerful, joyful and inspirational they are.
“Dirty Money” was co-written by our very own Marcos Garcia (aka Chico Mann), a longtime guitarist/vocalist for the group. Growing up in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of New York City, Marcos was greatly influenced by the sounds of Fela Kuti, Celia Cruz, Willie Colon, Lisa Lisa, & Afrika Bambaata. In 2011, the band reunited with producer and former Antibalas guitarist Gabriel Roth at Daptone Studios in Bushwick Brooklyn to record their fifth full length album titled “Antibalas”. The album was released on August 7, 2012 on the Daptone label.

Jack Jones - Real Live Girl
Nothing can beat getting swept off your feet by a real. live. girl…sings Jack Jones on this gem from his 1963 album, She Loves Me. The song was originally sung by Sid Caesar from the hit Broadway musical Little Me running that same year which went on to be nominated for 10 Tony Awards.
Discovered singing in clubs in San Francisco by Peter King in 1961, Jack Jones was quickly signed to the Kapp label. Paired with arranger Jack Elliott for this one, Elliott captures the breezy, playful spirit of the song by Cy Coleman & Carolyn Leah but throws in some bossa nova for good measure.
I’ll take the flowering hat
And the towering heel, and a squeal
of a real, live, girl.
hey, he’s just sayin’.

Bobby Hebb - I'll Be Anything For You
Sometimes maybe we feel like we might make any deal in the world not to let it end. It was Bobby Hebb’s personal outpouring of grief over his divorce that’s been said to have fueled the beauty, anguish, and wistful hope displayed on his quietly influential 1970 album, Love Games.
“I’ll Be Anything For You” with an incredible arrangement by James Fleming and Dave Roberts, seeks to close that deal. The Love Games album came four years after Bobby Hebb’s monster 8 million selling single multi-format classic, “Sunny”, and a full two years before similar work by Gamble & Huff & The O’Jays. It would provide the template for the direction R&B would take through the late 70′s and early 80′s, music that one keeps for special moods, private times, and most of all, as David Morpheus points out on the original liner notes, for times perhaps when one is not in love at the moment but should be.
You can hear the full results on the remastered version of the album (thank you Rob Santos) HERE.

Freddy Fresh - Badder Badder Schwing
We know what you were probably doing on July 26th, surely it was celebrating the 10th anniversary of Austin Powers in Goldmember. No? Well if you had been you would have probably been asking yourself “did I just hear a sample of Helen Reddy’s 1968 hit One Way Ticket, written by Stephen Lawrence and Bruce Hart, in that tune on that soundtrack?”.
The answer would have been “yes you did” and you would be referring to a track called “Badder Badder Schwing” by one of the most active and prolific American underground dance music artists of the past 20 years, Minneapolis’s own, Freddy Fresh. In addition to a growing stateside audience, Fresh was also one of the first contemporary non-Detroit techno/electro musicians to have a strong European following. Freddy Fresh’s fusion of electro & breakbeat funk springboards nicely with the big-beat fad of the late 90′s as demonstrated on his 1999 album The Last True Family Man. “Badder Badder Schwing” is a Fatboy Slim collaboration. Freestylers and Grandmaster Flash also contribute on this album.

Rebecca has built a strong network since arriving in New York 3 years ago, writing songs for Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Alice Smith among others. Her live shows and original compositions have attracted a loyal audience and combine elements of jazz, classic pop, soul, folk and cabaret.

Originally written for the Dick Van Dyke Show, this Cy Coleman & Carolyn Leigh tune became a big hit for Blossom Dearie in 1958 and again later for Peggy Lee. More great recordings of the song followed by the likes of Sarah Vaughan, Peggy Lee, Johnny Mathis and Nancy Wilson but Nat’s was the first. The arrangement is by Nelson Riddle.

Frank Sinatra - I Love My Wife
My mind at times
May dwell on sex
If someone’s rating dreams
Then most of mine I guess are double X
Recorded in 1977, “I Love My Wife” became an instant Frank Sinatra classic and was adored by married women all over. With a track record that included “Witchcraft” (1957) and “The Best Is Yet To Come” (1964), Sinatra knew he could count on his pal Cy Coleman to provide him with signature songs.
I Love My Wife is also the title of the hilarious hit Broadway musical about two married couples contemplating a carnal adventure during the sexual revolution of the 1970s; lyrics by Michael Stewart and music by Cy Coleman.

Sam Phillips - Tell Her What She Wants To Know
For seven seasons, Sam Phillips scored the television show Gilmore Girls, creating the soundtrack that played alongside the lives of the beloved characters on the hit WB show. The show’s soundtrack cd, Our Little Corner of the World: Music From Gilmore Girls, featured a number of Sam’s cues and a new tune, “Tell Her What She Wants To Know.”
Since then, “Tell Her What She Wants To Know,” has been rerecorded from the original version heard on the show. Sam went back and reinterpreted the song, presented here, as part of her ambitious year-long Long Play project. The Long Play – a music and art installation on the web which provided members five EPs and a full-legnth album (along with a smattering of bonus tracks and other exclusive content) – was universally hailed by the press and embraced by fans. ”Phillips has thrown open a virtual door to her creative world,” wrote the LA Times, “inviting in fans over the course of a year to watch and participate as she writes and records a new album.” For the time being, The Long Play remains open for business – allowing any new subscribers full access to all the content created during the Long Play project.

The clapboard jail and the co-op board
The garden club and the bedroom door
The sprinkled lawn and the mirrored hall
The Christmas tree
Just burn it all
“Burn Down This Town” – from Rosanne Cash’s Grammy nominated, critically acclaimed Black Cadillac – is a track filled with a perfect mix of attitude and grace. The sentimental urgency of the song, co-written by Rosanne and her producer/guitarist/husband John Leventhal, captivates from the first listen. Black Cadillac – billed by her label as a “12 song musical memoir” – was a fitting tribute to her mother, father and stepmother, all who passed within a two-year span during the writing and recording of this album. Rave reviews from the likes of Rolling Stone and Newsweek – among so many others – hailed the album as being Rosanne’s greatest work to date.
In February of this year Rosanne was presented with the 2012 AFTRA Media and Entertainment Excellence Award, an annual gala taking place in New York where talent in television, film and broadcasting communities are honored. Rosanne also recently shared the stage at the Brady Theater in Tulsa, OK at the Woody Guthrie Centennial Tribute with the likes of the Flaming Lips, Arlo Guthrie, Jackson Browne, John Mellencamp, Taylor Hansen and more.
Last month, Rosanne held a one-week “digital residency” on AOL’s The Boot music site – each day premiering an exclusive video from fan requested set list, titled Live from Zone C. An intimate performance recorded entirely in the living room of her New York City home to celebrate the release of the 2-disc anthology, The Essential Rosanne Cash.
Oh, and if you don’t already follow Rosanne’s tweets, we strongly suggest you do. You won’t be sorry: @rosannecash

Jon Brion - Walking Through Walls
Nothing in this world is gonna hold me
No thugs on the road are gonna roll me
No fast-talking girl is gonna slow me
Nothing’s gonna stop me at all
I’m walking through walls
In 2001, Jon Brion released his first – and thus far, only – solo album, Meaningless. Jon certainly did not rest on his laurels in the time before and since, having scored a batch of critically acclaimed films (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I ♥ Huckabees, etc) and produced everyone from Kanye West to FIona Apple to Best Coast. Upon release, Meaningless instantly met with tremendous critical acclaim and has retained a massive cult following. “Walking Through Walls” – co written with his pal, the incredible Grant-Lee Phillips – is a Notable office favorite… we dare you not to sing along.
On the film side, Jon recently wrapped up scoring the Focus Features animated film ParaNorman, due out this August. He is currently working on the next Judd Apatow film, This Is 40 – a sort-of sequel to 2007′s Knocked Up – which is set to hit theaters in December.
LA residents and visitors, be sure to catch Jon Brion live as he performs at his second home, Largo at the Coronet. You can witness one of these legendary performances at the end of just about every month. To see a schedule of upcoming performances and to buy tickets, click HERE.

Original 1966 Broadway Cast - The Rhythm of Life
The Rhythm Of Life is a powerful beat
Puts a tingle in your fingers and a tingle in your feet
One of our favorite tunes around the Notable offices, “The Rhythm of Life,” is classic Cy Coleman Broadway. An undeniably happy beat drives this tune that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
Written by Cy and Dorothy Fields for the 1966 hit Broadway musical Sweet Charity, a play that reinvented Broadway, and remains one of musical theatre’s most revered classics.
We chose the original Broadway cast version for today’s Top Tune – which became a centerpiece of this iconic play. In 1969 it was recorded by Sammy Davis Jr. for Charity’s film adaptation; and a couple of years later soulful versions by the likes of Motown royalty Diana Ross & the Supremes and The Temptations would hit the airwaves, exposing this classic to a whole new audience.
Enjoy this clip of Sammy Davis Jr. performing the tune from the Charity film adaptation, with choreography from the legendary Bob Fosse. One of the best videos you’ll see on the internet today? We think so. Enjoy “The Rhythm of Life!”

Jenny O. - Won't Let You Leave
Jenny O. is currently putting the finishing touches on her forthcoming debut LP – titled Automechanic – which she cut in LA with wunderkind producer Jonathan Wilson (Father John Misty, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Dawes). While we can’t wait to unleash this brand new batch of songs on everyone, our hearts still go to Jenny’s debut EP, Home (Manimal Vinyl), which first caught our attention with it’s beautiful simplicity. Home‘s lead-off single “Well OK Honey” became a bonafide indie hit, getting a good amount of love from radio programmers here and overseas (spearheaded by LA’s KCRW), as well as a bunch of great TV and ad syncs.
Today we are pleased to present Home‘s “Won’t Let You Leave” – a favorite that is always in rotation around the Notable offices. Discerning listeners may recognize the tune when it was featured on the FX Network’s original comedy “Wilfred” recently…
Jenny will be performing the new songs during her gigs at the upcoming SXSW festival in Austin, TX next week. If you’ll be in town, come check her out at one of the five shows she has booked (below). For those of you that won’t be in TX, Jenny O. will be coming to a town (or country) near you soon!
P.S. We love this live video of Jenny performing “Won’t Let You Leave” on the back patio of LA’s Bootleg Theatre.

Jon Brion - Knock Yourself Out
Today’s Top Tune is a song most will know from David O. Russell’s “existential comedy” I ♥ Huckabees. Huckabees was, of course, scored by Jon Brion – and he contributed this song to soundtrack of the film, which featured a incredible ensemble cast including Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, Jude Law, Naomi Watts and Mark Walhberg.
In addition to I ♥ Huckabees, Jon’s film scoring credits include Hard Eight, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Break-Up, Synecdoche, New York, Step Brothers, Glago’s Guest, The Other Guys, The Future, and two films scheduled for release this year: the 3D stop-motion animated comedy thriller adventure ParaNorman, and Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up “sequel” This Is Forty.
On the “pop” side of his career, Jon has worked as a writer and/or producer for the diverse likes of Fiona Apple, Kanye West, Aimee Mann, Katy Perry, Rufus Wainwright, Elliott Smith, Spoon, Best Coast, Of Montreal, Dido, and Keane, to name but a few. His semi-regular gigs at his LA home Largo at the Coronet remain consistent sellouts – his next performance is set for March 30. If you live in or are visiting the LA area, come down and see why these shows have become the stuff of legend.

Elvis Costello - Song With Rose
Between last breaths and first regrets
The days dragged on like cigarettes
In the distance martyrs and martinets
Dally, dancing with the empty silhouettes of threats
Over the years Rosanne Cash has written a few songs with her longtime pal Elvis Costello, and today we’re proud to bring you the aptly titled “Song With Rose” – a centerpiece from Costello’s 2008 release Momufuku. It’s not the only time the two worked together – in fact they actually cut a couple of tracks with mutual pal Kris Kristofferson which have yet to see the light of day (although a live performance of one of the tunes, “April 5th,” was featured on Costello’s brilliant “talk” show, Spectacle).
If you ask us, these two share a lyrical DNA and are natural collaborators, and any pairing of the duo is always welcome (Rosanne’s stunning reading of E.C.’s “Our Little Angel” is an office favorite).
Joining Costello on the track are his band the Impostors (Pete Thomas, Steve Nieve and Davey Faragher), along with guests Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley), Johnathan Rice, “Farmer” Dave Scher, and (producer of the upcoming Jenny O. and Father John Misty discs) Jonathan Wilson.

Alice Clark - Don't You Care
Frequently dubbed “the Holy Grail of modern soul,” Alice Clark’s self-titled 1972 debut album has received some serious overdue recognition in recent years. Clark – whose whereabouts following these recordings seem to be shrouded in a bit of mystery – only recorded three sessions that produced two singles and the one album. The record – highly prized among hardcore R&B enthusiasts – is an amazing soul collection that matches Clark’s distinctive powerhouse voice with impeccable song selection. Recently this masterpiece has been lovingly re-released on vinyl, cd and digitally, and is finding her a much-deserved international cult audience. Bobby Hebb had three of his tunes cut on this disc, including “Don’t You Care,” which is one of our favorite grooves on the record. The album has often been compared to the best work of such diverse legends as Gil Scott-Heron, Janis Joplin, Billie Holliday, and Donny Hathaway. “The best R&B you’ve probably never heard,” hails one critic – we couldn’t agree more. Dig yourself some Alice Clark.

Peggy Lee - Big Spender
1966 saw the debut of the iconic hit musical “Sweet Charity” on Broadway: Combining the music of Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields, the direction and choreography of the legendary Bob Fosse, and a book written by Neil Simon, “Charity” literally reinvented the look and sound of contemporary musical theatre. Of the many standards that came out of the play, “Big Spender” remains one of musical theater’s most memorable classics. Originally immortalized in the play and original cast record (and later by Fosse’s classic sequence in the film), “Big Spender” had been covered by a very diverse group over the years: from Shirley Bassey to Queen, Bette Midler to Chaka Khan, and so on. Our own Sam Phillips has just cut the tune for an upcoming Sweet Relief charity release, due out later this year.
But for today’s Top Tune we present you with Peggy Lee’s classic take from 1966… dig.

Sam Phillips - Baby I Can't Please You
Martinis and Bikinis, Sam Phillips’ mid-90s Grammy-nominated Beatlesesque opus, is a key record in the evolution of one of our generation’s most praised and unpredictable songwriters. Martinis was universally hailed as a musical turning point for Phillips and tagged by numerous critics as one of the best albums of the year. The disc, produced by long-time collaborator T Bone Burnett, spawned two alternative radio and video hits in “I Need Love” and “Baby I Can’t Please You,” and gained Sam a new legion of devoted followers.

Jenny O. - All My Wishes
All my wishes have come true
I’m thinking about it and I feel blue
Lonelier too.
Be my summer take my fall
Come winter you’re cold and it’s all my fault
Isn’t it all?
We’ve just returned from the Sundance Film Festival, where Jenny O. wowed packed crowds of attendees at the Sundance/ASCAP Music Cafe during her two performances there. Jenny’s music has been everywhere lately – from recent syncs on “True Blood” and “Wilfred” to a brand new Toyota Camry commercial, as well as growing radio airplay (spearheaded by very early support from LA’s legendary KCRW).
“All My Wishes” is the second track on Jenny O.’s debut EP, Home (Manimal Vinyl), and a personal favorite here in the Notable offices. A hauntingly simple arrangement and an irresistible melody frame this beautiful tale from the pen of Jenny O. Listen and enjoy…
Following the success of Home, Jenny headed into the studio with producer Jonathan Wilson to cut her first full-length LP. Recording has just completed on the as-yet-untiltled album, and it’s a stunner… stay tuned for further release info as we get it!

Jon Brion - I Believe She's Lying
We are thrilled to start the new year by announcing that Jon Brion has joined Notable Music for exclusive publishing administrative agreement in the US. We are so proud to have him join our musical family of great songwriters.
As a producer and/or co-writer, Jon has worked with everyone from Kanye West to Fiona Apple, Spoon to Elliott Smith, Rufus Wainwright to Best Coast, to name but a few. Brion’s numerous film scores – from his Grammy nominated work on such modern classics as Magnolia and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, to current projects such as the forthcoming ParaNorman – have only grown his recognition as one of the most respected contemporary composers.
His semi-regular shows at LA’s famed Largo at the Coronet have literally become the stuff of legend – as the Largo site itself says “you never know who might drop down the chimney for some unannounced fun.” The too-numerous-to-list parade of Jon’s special guests over the years is a virtual who’s who of musicians and singers, from Neil Finn to Nels Cline, Sam Phillips to Brad Mehldau, Robyn Hitchcock to Aimee Mann… you get the idea.
Jon’s lone solo release, Meaningless, remains a critical favorite, and is regularly cited as an influential record for many artists and songwriters. It is from that album that we present “I Believe She’s Lying” – a classic slice of intricate pop from the brain Jon Brion. The tune has already been covered by a varied group, including Rhett Miller of the Old 97′s, genre-bending R&B wunderkind Spree Wilson, and a cappella group Reverse Osmosis.

Toots and the Maytals - Sunny
Happy New Year from all of us here at Notable! We are so excited to start the year of Top Tunes with arguably one of the best known ska and reggae groups of all time, Toots and the Maytals, and their cover of Bobby Hebb’s iconic R&B/pop tune “Sunny.” The Maytals’ seminal and distinctly Jamaican sound blended mento, folk, and gospel influences into a powerful new sound that, while rooted in rural traditions, delivered a completely modern feeling. Throughout the 1960′s this sound – featuring the inimitable Toots Hibbert on lead vocals – propelled the group to being the biggest selling musical act Jamaica had ever known at that time, and they are still going strong today. “Sunny” was recorded between tours at Toots Hibbert’s family studio in Kingston, Jamaica in October 2011 and arranged and mixed by Notable’s own Jeremy Page in Brooklyn, NY.
“Sunny” has just been released and is available on iTunes, Amazon, and everywhere fine digital music is sold.
This winter, get sunny with Toots…

Jenny O. - Get Down For The Holidays
Let’s hit the dancefloor
See everyone we know
We’ll cut a rug and
Sneak up on the mistletoe
I’ll sing a song or two with them and then
We best be on our way, yeah
Off to paint this moonlit town ablaze
Shake it for the ones who got away
That’s why we get down in the holidays
That’s how we get down for the holidays.
The holidays are upon us, and our own Jenny O. is celebrating by wrapping up mixing on her first full-length album, which was produced by the amazing Jonathan Wilson.
It’s been an incredible year for Jenny – her debut EP, Home, and it’s infectious first single (and unforgettable video) “Well OK Honey” received nationwide airplay – including a lot of love from LA’s influential KCRW – and lead to tours with the likes of Dave Matthews, Ben Harper, and Leon Russell. Her track on the Buddy Holly tribute album Rave On (“I’m Gonna Love You Too”) received major accolades from critics and fans; this was followed by her adventurous cover of Pink Floyd’s “Happiest Days Of Our Lives/Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2” for the school-themed charity compilation Cool For School, benefitting The Lunchbox Fund.
If 2011 was any indication of good things to come, well, we can’t wait for 2012!
Happy holidays, all!

That Handsome Devil - Adapt
Followed by a cult of fans and critics alike, That Handsome Devil comes parading back to town with a dramatic celebration of the macabre: ‘The Heart Goes to Heaven, The Head Goes to Hell.’ Barreling from guitar funk swagger to unhinged howling; bemoaning croons of love and loss, black magic and whiskey, THD drag you down the rabbit hole with exhilarating highs and heart-wrenching lows. Only in the end do you finally catch your breath, just in time to play it all over again.
That Handsome Devil, everybody’s favorite psychedelic-rockabilly-jazz-R&B-blues-surf band, resurfaces at the Notable Top Tune stable with “Adapt” – a track from their latest, The Heart Goes To Heaven, The Head Goes To Hell. The band, which features Notable’s Jeremy Page, frontman Godforbid, and some of the east coast’s finest young players, have spent 2011 touring and recording this latest release – which has met with great acclaim from fans and press alike.
The discerning ear will recognize the music of THD from some prominent videogame placements (RockBand, etc) as well as a memorable use of their tune “Mexico” on Showtime’s original hit series “Weeds” (and on it’s accompanying soundtrack cd).

The Bonebrake Syncopators - Why Try To Change Me Now
Best known as the drummer and a founding member of legendary LA punk band X, DJ Bonebrake’s musical roots run deeper than many may know. Following his groundbreaking work with such iconic punk bands as the Eyes and, most notably, X (the later of which he is still a member), DJ began to further explore his love of jazz, both classic and of the Latin variety.
With his Bonebrake Syncopators, DJ has found an outlet for his passion of jazz from the early eras, and the combo has aided in his growing rep as one of the finest vibraphonists this side of the Mississippi. Joining DJ (who’s playing the vibes) in the Syncopators are Jonathan Stout on guitar, Dave Stuckey on drums, Wally Hersom on upright bass, and Jeremy Wakefield doing double duty on this track on lap steel guitar and vocals.
Cy Coleman and his first collaborative partner, Joseph A. McCarthy, wrote several classics during their time together, but “Why Try To Change Me Now” is arguably the duo’s most beloved composition. Recorded by such crooners as Frank Sinatra and Nancy Wilson, soul legend Brook Benton, Jazz great Elvin Jones, and most recently Fiona Apple, “Why Try To Change Me Now” is an immortal standard – a truly timeless accompaniment to a broken heart or a hearty glass of whisky. Or, most likely, both.
We are proud to present to you – for the first time anywhere – the Syncopators’ take on “Why Try To Change Me Now”…

Kendra Morris - Concrete Waves
From the forthcoming debut LP by Kendra Morris, Wax Poetics Records releases the first single, “Concrete Waves,” a menacingly funky groove that serves as a warning of what’s to come. Kendra’s range is massive. She can belt out a big chorus or stay in the cut and show off her upper range. Heavy, delicate. While already being compared to the blue-eyed-soul divas of the U.K., Kendra’s own unique songwriting and lush harmonies set her firmly in a league of her own.
Not to mention that the consistently inventive aural atmospheres—from heavy, head-nodding rhythms to introspective, soulful guitar work—created by cowriter/producer Jeremy Page push the music giant steps ahead of the current soul scene. Kendra and Page expand the genre, creating something that is their own.
The single, which debuts on iTunes on Nov. 22, 2011, was remixed by the iconic DJ Premier. It will also be released as an official Serato Control Vinyl 12-inch.

Adrian Younge Presents Venice Dawn - It's Me
Following up his score for the cult-classic film Black Dynamite, composer Adrian Younge envisioned a new sound that would revisit his earlier, more baroque instrumental work of Venice Dawn and mesh it with the deep, gritty soul of Black Dynamite, eventually deciding to bring everything full circle by releasing the material under the moniker Venice Dawn. This new LP, titled Something About April, is a dark, heavy mix of psychedelic soul and cinematic instrumentals with hip-hop aesthetics, touching on influences from Ennio Morricone to Air, Portishead to King Crimson, RZA to Otis Redding.
The first single on Wax Poetics Records, “It’s Me” featuring guest singer-songwriter Rebecca Jordan, exhibits classic production techniques and authentic instrumentation, recalling the glory days of ’70s R&B, while the vocal workout and swagger allow the music to sit firmly with modern artists who redefine soul music like Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill. Some say it’s a mix between Aretha Franklin circa 1969 and Wu-Tang Clan circa 1992.
Something About April was released digitally on Nov. 8, 2011. The CD will drop on Nov. 29, followed by a limited-edition vinyl release on Dec. 13.

Sammy Davis Jr. - I'm a Brass Band
1969 saw the release of Sammy Davis Jr’s I’ve Gotta Be Me – a hit album for the crooner which featured no less than three songs from Cy Coleman’s massive hit play Sweet Charity. In addition to today’s Top Tune of “I’m a Brass Band,” the LP also included Sammy’s takes on Charity‘s “If My Friends Could See Me Now” and “My Personal Property” (fans also know that Sammy appeared that same year in the film version of the play, delivering a powerhouse on-screen “Rhythm of Life”).
Sweet Charity debuted on Broadway in 1966, combining the music of Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields. the direction and choreography of the legendary Bob Fosse, and a book written by none other than Neil Simon. “Charity” literally reinvented the look and sound of contemporary musical theatre, and it remains an in-demand production these 45 years later.

Sam Phillips - Zero Zero Zero!
Big numbers go by
I close my eyes
I never count a large amount
My lucky number is below one
You never know when you might need a zero
When Sam Phillips and producer T Bone Burnett entered the studio to follow up her hit Grammy nominated Martinis & Bikinis album, they enlisted a bevy of A-list players such as Jon Brion, Jim Keltner, Matt Chamberlain, Don Heffington, Greg Leisz, Jerry Scheff and Marc Ribot, among many others, to craft an original musical soundscape – a retro-futuristic pop collection dubbed “Omnipop.”
Among Omnipop’s often overlooked gems include a co-write with REM (“Slapstick Heart”), and, an enduring personal favorite, “Zero Zero Zero!” Perhaps “Zero” is channeling the likes of Esquivel and his ilk, we don’t know… what we do know is that this pop nugget puts a big smile on our face whenever we hear it.
So, take a peek into what we think Sam Phillips’ space-age bachelor(ette) pad might sound like. You never know when you might need a zero…

Jenny O. - Well OK Honey
This week we are very excited to introduce you to the newest member of the Notable family:
“Fierce, focused and joyful” is how Ann Powers of NPR describes the music of Jenny O, and we couldn’t agree more. Jenny’s debut EP was released in 2011 to tremendous attention and acclaim. The disc, Home, was initially self-released, and in July was picked up by Los Angeles based indie, Manimal Vinyl (Warpaint, Bat for Lashes, Sister Crayon, papercranes, etc.). Home’s infectious first single (and accompanying unforgettable video) “Well OK Honey” has received nationwide airplay, including a lot of love from Los Angeles’ influential KCRW. You may also recognize the tune from an episode of HBO’s “True Blood” a few weeks back…
Jenny O. – fresh from touring with Ben Harper, Leon Russell, and as a featured performer on Dave Matthews’ Caravan tour – is currently in the studio with producer Jonathan Wilson (Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Jonathan Rice, Dawes) to continue recording her first full-length album, due in early 2012.

Rosanne Cash - Black Cadillac
It was a black Cadillac drove you away
Everybody’s talkin’
But they don’t have much to say
It was a black sky of rain
None of it fell
One of us gets to go to heaven
One has to stay here in hell
The title track off of Rosanne’s eleventh studio effort, Black Cadillac – billed by her label as a “12 song musical memoir” – was a fitting tribute to her mother, father and stepmother, all who passed within a two-year span during the writing and recording of this album. Wrote Mojo Magazine: “This album is extraordinary. It is brave, difficult, and honest. It is utterly moving and beautiful. Because it so successfully marries all of her strengths as a songwriter, singer, and musician, Black Cadillac may be the crowning achievement of her career thus far.”
Nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 2007, Cash received much praise for the project: “Rosanne Cash’s best” hailed Rolling Stone; Newsweek echoed, calling it “Stunning. This is not just the best album she’s made in a long time, this is the best album she’s ever made.”

Grady Tate, a legendary soul-jazz drummer and singer, may be best known for his session work with some of the finest jazz artists and vocalists of any generation: Lionel Hampton, Jimmy Smith, Grant Green, Lena Horne, Astrud Gilberto, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Bill Evans, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Quincy Jones, Stan Getz, and Wes Montgomery (to name a few) all used Grady on historic recordings.
Tate – who also served as a key member of the New York Jazz Quartet in the 70s – had a string of critically lauded solo records as well. His debut disc, 1968’s criminally out-of print Windmills Of My Mind, remains a highly collectable artifact of late 60s soul-jazz. (NOTE: iTunes has the album available for download!)
“Would You Believe” was written by our own Bobby Hebb. Hebb – obviously best known for the ubiquitous R&B/pop classic “Sunny” – had begun to gain notice as a songwriter, and Tate was one of the first people to cover one of his tunes. Aside from one of the nearly 700 covers of “Sunny” that is…!

That Handsome Devil - Mexico
This week we bring you a favorite tune from one of the newest members of the Notable family, Mr. Jeremy Page. “Mexico” is a track from everybody’s favorite psychedelic-rockabilly-jazz-R&B-blues-surf band, That Handsome Devil. The band was founded in Boston by Godforbid and Page, both prior members of the hip hop group Alaskan Fishermen.
“…They mix it up with some weird jazz-y sounding stuff, and some fun pop music-y stuff and a little bit o’ hip-hop, and then some weirdly fun lyrics.” – Kel Munger, Sound Advice
“Mexico” – written by Page and THD frontman Godforbid – was featured on the critically acclaimed Showtime original series, “Weeds,” as well as appearing on the series’ soundtrack release. The tune is also available on the band’s 2008 release A City Dressed In Dynamite. In addition, That Handsome Devil has had two songs featured on the hugely successful videogame, Rock Band.
The band has just released their latest full-length album, The Heart Goes To Heaven, The Head Goes To Hell, is currently available HERE.
Jeremy is currently in the studio completing production on the upcoming debut release for Kendra Morris (Wax Poetics records).

Dusty Springfield - Where Am I Going?
Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields’ score for the legendary hit play Sweet Charity spawned many memorable numbers (“Big Spender,” “If My Friends Could See Me Now” among them), but along the way one of the play’s most moving ballads has criminally been little heard outside of the theater in the past couple of decades: the plaintive closing solo “Where Am I Going.”
The song has been covered by an impressive list of vocalists over the years: Barbara Streisand charted with the song early in her career, and soulful divas ranging from Dionne Warwick, Mary Wells and Kim Weston all committed defining interpretations to wax. For today, we decided to present one of our favorite takes… this one from the Queen of blue-eyed soul, the inimitable Dusty Springfield. The track provided the album title for Springfield’s 1967 release, and her reading of the tune is exactly what you’d expect – a lush soulful ballad fronted by one of the most unmistakable female voices of the last century.

Missy Higgins - I'm In Love Again
Peggy Lee – justifiably known best as one of the premier vocalists of her time – was an accomplished songwriter, having written the majority of her recorded catalog. Cy Coleman and Lee were not only great friends, but also frequent collaborators… the stunning “I’m In Love Again” is one of their finest – and best known – compositions.
Australian superstar Missy Higgins honored us by performing the song on our tribute album to Cy, The Best Is Yet To Come: The Songs of Cy Coleman. Missy – who has enjoyed considerable success stateside the past few years – delivered an interpretation of the song so powerful, she quite literally made it her own. Her impassioned vocal on this track is jaw-dropping… listen for yourself.

Rhett Miller - Sunny
One of the most enduring soul/pop tunes of the last century, Bobby Hebb’s “Sunny” has been covered from everyone from James Brown to Dusty Springfield, Wilson Pickett to Hampton Hawes… the list of icons that have performed the tune goes on and on (Want proof? Check THIS!).
Not long ago, Notable pal Rhett Miller of the Old 97′s travelled to Dallas to re-imagine the song for us (with the aid of producer Salim Nourallah)… the resulting effort is perhaps the finest pop/rock reading of the timeless tune. A wonderful arrangement – a classic Rhett Miller groove with tinges of light spaghetti western make for a very happy Notable Music Co. Thank you, Rhett!

Kendra Morris - All Night
I heard you were here
And then you disappeared
Last night
When they killed the light
Words we didn’t say
Our eyes that took us down to more
Then we were ready for
You came up behind me, grabbed my wrists in the dark
And said ‘don’t look at what you can’t see’
Now all night, all night
I’ve been looking for you all night
Imagine our excitement when Notable’s latest signings (with our partners at Wax Poetics) Kendra Morris and Jeremy Page headed into the studio to reinterpret Sam Phillips’ “All Night”…
The duo tackled the tune – keeping Sam’s lyrics out front and adding their own signature vibe to the track – transforming the song into a sultry classic R&B groove.
Kendra and Jeremy are currently in the studio finishing Kendra’s debut album of all new material which will be released by Wax Poetics Records in Spring 2012.

Louis Armstrong - Hey, Look Me Over
The 1960 play WIldcat is significant not only as the Broadway debut for Lucille Ball (arguably the biggest star on the planet at the time), but also as it marked Cy Coleman’s first foray into the world of musical theatre… a community in which he would soon become one of it’s most legendary and prolific figures.
The play was an instant hit… but it’s doubtful at the time that anyone would guess that the show’s opening number would go on to achieve such iconic status. “Hey, Look Me Over” became an instant hit, and was subsequently recorded by a “who’s who” of the era’s stars: Bing Crosby & Rosemary Clooney, Bobby Short, The Lettermen, Judy Garland, Mel Tormé, and Peggy Lee, among many others. A personal favorite is the reading by the one and only Louis Armstrong, presented here.
Since 1962, Louisiana residents and football fans in general undoubtedly know the tune as “Hey, Fighting Tigers,”… LSU got Cy and co-writer Carolyn Leigh’s permission to adapt the song as LSU’s official school song (with new lyrics from Leigh), and it remains one of the more recognizable sports anthems to this day.

Rosanne Cash w/ Steve Earle - I'll Change For You
I’ll change for you
I’ll change for you
I’ll change for you
I’ll turn night into day
A personal favorite from Rosanne’s acclaimed Rules of Travel cd… the unconventional conversational vocal between Rosanne and Steve Earle makes for one of the best modern duets committed to wax. The song hits you with both an intimacy and an urgency as the two wrap their unmistakable vocals around Rosanne’s lyrics.
‘Cause everything reminds me of you

A silent scream, a lover’s cry
Till I can’t do nothing
But change for you…

Fiona Apple - I Walk A Little Faster
The legendary songwriting team of Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh gave us some amazing pop standards – “The Best is Yet to Come,” “Witchcraft,” “Hey, Look Me Over” among them. One of their lesser-known numbers,
the tender ballad “I Walk a Little Faster,” was recently lovingly revived by by the incredible Fiona Apple for the Cy Coleman tribute album The Best is Yet to Come. The song, beloved by the jazz and pop set alike, appeared on albums by such luminaries as Tony Bennett, Blossom Dearie, Bobby Short, Mabel Mercer, and Rod McKuen – but in recent years it remained rather unknown to the contemporary listener. Until now.

Adrian Younge - 1969 Organ
Long before Black Dynamite popped the trunk, composer/producer Adrian Younge was hard at work on another soundtrack. When it surfaced in 2000, Venice Dawn appeared to be the music from a lost 1969 Italian film, but don’t bother looking for it on Netflix. The album itself, however, has been recently refined down to five tracks, remastered, and will be released as a free EP by Wax Poetics Records next month. Part King Crimson, part Air, the music—like “1969 Organ” heard here—shows the composer in his early form, obsessing over Italian soundtracks, ’70s synthesizers, moody instrumentals, sparse compositions, and funky drum breaks. Its rerelease eleven years later connects the dots between Black Dynamite, Younge’s early work, and his newest project, recorded under the aptly named moniker Venice Dawn. The new LP, Something About April, will be released by Wax Poetics Records in September.

Musiq Soulchild - Just Friends (Sunny)
Musiq Soulchild has often cited such icons as Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Sly & the Family Stone and Ray Charles as his musical mentors, so it was no surprise when he used Bobby Hebb’s iconic “Sunny” as the backbone of one of his biggest tracks: “Just Friends (Sunny).”
Musiq Soulchild (aka Taalib Johnson) scored huge with this track in 2000… “Just Friends (Sunny)” made Top 10 on the R&B Billboard singles chart, as well as making Top 40 of the mag’s Pop single rankings. In his career, he has had two platinum albums, four gold albums and seven hit singles, as well as amassing an impressive 11 Grammy nominations.
In addition to some great syncs appearing around the time of release, “Just Friends (Sunny)” was covered by none other than Prince on his 2002 release “One Nite Alone: Live.”

Sanders Bohlke - The Weight of Us
We love this song. Written by Chris Keup & Sanders Bohlke, “The Weight of Us” is a truly timeless, soaring ballad, more than worthy of all the praise it has received. Sam Phillips - Broken Circle
To celebrate today’s release of Sam Phillips’ Solid State, this week’s Top Tune is a song that has been getting a LOT of play in the Notable offices.
Sam recently announced the independent release of Solid State, a collection of 13 songs from the recently completed “Long Play” project – Her ambitious art and music installation on the web, which met with great response from fans and press alike. Aimed for her listeners who did not join the Long Play subscription project, Solid State’s songs are Sam’s selection from the 40+ songs released to Long Play members since October 2009.
As Sam says, “As most of you know, I have just completed my first all-digital music and art project called Long Play. I started out not knowing what kind of music I was going to make during that year—I only knew that I was going to attempt to write and record 5 EPs and an album along with audio logs, essays, art and a drum fill of the week. It took a little over a year to make all the music, but it also inspired songs for a new album, which I am recording now. To raise funds for the recording of this new album, I not only went through my pockets for loose change, but considered a bake sale as well. Since the only baked treat I have mastered is the peanut butter chocolate chip Rice Crispy Square, I decided to release Solid State instead.”
The just-released video for “Broken Circle” is a must-see. Just a few blocks from MOCA’s current street art exhibit at the Geffen Contemporary is an evolving wall of street art. For the video, Sam and collaborator Eric Gorfain wanted to document this wall. Watch the video HERE!
“Broken Circle” has also become a recent staple at Notable pal Rhett Miller’s live shows lately. We love his version!

Kendra Morris - Charms of the Arms of Love
Bobby Hebb’s deserved legacy will remain his iconic “Sunny”… the voice and pen that crafted that multi-format standard took four years to create his follow up, 1970’s Love Games - which has been hailed “as exquisite an album of adult contemporary R&B as you’ll find.”
Historians have noted that the under-appreciated “Love Games” would serve as an unofficial blueprint for much of the classic R&B that dominated the US charts in the years that followed – comparing it to Gamble and Huff’s best work, as well as Stevie Wonder’s revolutionary early 70s output.
“Charms of the Arms of Love” is one of those great soul classics you’ve never heard. In 1972, the great Alice Clark recorded a stellar version of the tune on her critically revered and criminally unheard debut (and, sadly, only) release. Since then it remained a relatively unknown tune, except for a small army of soul music enthusiasts.
Recently Notable’s Kendra Morris and Jeremy Page took to the studio to reinvent “Charms”… conjuring classic R&B grooves as well as the ghosts of spy movie themes of yesteryear in the process to craft something totally unique and worthy of the tune. We’re so happy to share with you this brilliant re-imagining of one of Notable’s classics by two who represent Notable’s future. The tune is now available for purchase on iTunes, or wherever fine digital music is sold.
Kendra and Jeremy are currently hard at work on recording Kendra’s debut album for Wax Poetics, which is set for release next Spring. In the meantime, Kendra will hit the road this week as vocalist with the legendary guitarist and songwriter Dennis Coffey (he of the Funk Brothers, etc), including stops at Bonnaroo and some international dates along the way:

Dave Palmer feat. Sara Watkins - Seesaw
1973 saw the debut of Seesaw – a musical play based on the William Gibson play Two for the Seesaw, featuring songs from Cy Coleman and his frequent collaborator, the legendary Dorothy Fields. A critical hit, the play ran for a year on Broadway before launching a successful regional run. The production was nominated for seven Tony Awards in 1974, winning two (Best Actor for Tommy Tune and Best Choreography); the female lead, Michelle Lee, won Best Actress at that year’s Drama Desk Awards.
Dave Palmer, the producer and arranger of the Cy Coleman tribute album “The Best Is Yet To Come,” recently went into the studio with the brilliant Sara Watkins to tackle the play’s title tune, and we love their take on it… transforming the tale into a heartbreaking pop ballad.
Watkins came to public consciousness as a member of Nickel Creek, an acoustic trio who’s natural musicianship and stellar vocals propelled them to great success and critical response, fusing their bluegrass roots into a contemporary sound that became all their own. In 2009, after a handful of records with Nickel Creek, Sara released her first self-titled solo record (produced by John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin) to tremendous acclaim, firmly establishing her as a solo artist who has only scratched the surface of her creative output. A side note: Sara and Dave Palmer also collaborated on another Cy composition, “Too Many Tomorrows,” on the aforementioned Cy Coleman tribute album.

The Jon Rauhouse Sestet feat. Rachel Flotard - Witchcraft
“Jon Rauhouse plays pedal steel guitar the way John Zorn plays the saxophone.” —Paste Magazine
Written in 1957, “Witchcraft” was originally composed as an instrumental piece by Cy Coleman for a small theatre revue. Lyrics were later added by Coleman’s longtime collaborator Carolyn Leigh, and the tune was subsequently recorded by Sinatra, in an arrangement by the great Nelson Riddle.
In 1957 Sinatra was in the middle of filming “Pal Joey” for Columbia Pictures and his time was even more limited than usual – but Capitol Records really wanted to release a new single, and began pressuring Frank to find a tune. Sinatra heard a demo of “Witchcraft” (sung by Cy) and immediately cut it. The song spent 16 weeks on the charts and went on to became one of Frank’s most iconic numbers. Sinatra actually recorded “Witchcraft” three times in a studio setting: The first recording was the ’57 single release (later released on his compilation album “All the Way” in ’61), Sinatra and Riddle re-recorded “Witchcraft” during his Reprise Records years for 63′s “Sinatra’s Sinatra”, and finally, he recorded it as a duet with Anita Baker for “Duets” in 1993. Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and the Oscar Peterson Trio are among those who have all tackled the song, recording classic versions all their own.
Jon Rauhouse first came to critical notoriety as a member of the Grievous Angels in the mid 1990s. Since then, Jon – one of the new masters of pedel steel (and Hawaiian guitar) – has put out several of his own critically acclaimed releases, as well as appearing on tours and recordings by the likes of Neko Case, Sally Timms, Kelly Hogan, Calexico, the Waco Brothers, Giant Sand, and the Old 97′s, among others.
We were thrilled when Jon said he wanted to tackle a version of “Witchcraft”… and we are pleased today to present you Mr. Rauhouse’s swinging affair, featuring sublime vocals courtesy of Rachel Flotard.

The Bonebrake Syncopators feat. DJ Bonebrake - Playboy's Theme
in 1959 Hugh Hefner made his first foray into television, debuting “Playboy’s Penthouse” – a informal variety show which was set in a “house party” atmosphere. Hef needed to set the tone for this jazzy affair, so he went to his pal Cy Coleman and tapped him to write a theme song for the show. “Playboy’s Theme” would go on to become one of the generation’s defining instrumentals and Cy’s biggest hit as a performer. It has lived a huge life beyond that TV show (and it’s late 60s/early 70s spin-off, “Playboy After Dark”), and has gone on to define “bachelor pad cool.”
DJ Bonebrake, he of the legendary LA punk band X, recently recorded a number of Cy tunes for an upcoming EP release with his band the Bonebrake Syncopators. DJ and the band – Wally Hersom, Jonathan Stout, Dave Stuckey and Jeremy Wakefield – have reinvented the compositions in a way that we know would make Cy proud. Here’s a sneak preview… dig the Syncopators’ “Playboy’s Theme.”

Rosanne Cash with Johnny Cash - September When It Comes
In 2003, after a long hiatus from recording, Rosanne Cash released Rules of Travel – a universally acclaimed collection which found her evolution as a songwriter and a singer reach new plateaus. Featuring beautifully sparse production by John Leventhal, Rules marked a powerful return to the scene for Rosanne, and was instantly praised by fans and critics alike.
The disc sported a few guest vocalists: Sheryl Crow, Steve Earle, Teddy Thompson… and, on the stunning “September When It Comes,” Johnny Cash.
“He was in bad health, he got very ill for a while,” Rosanne said at the time. “I was facing my dad’s mortality for the first time. It’s deeply unsettling when you come to that point in your life when your parents suddenly become frail and ill. Of course, I was very affected by it. So I called him—I was going down to Nashville anyway—and I said, ‘Dad, I’m going to bring the tape, and if you’re feeling well enough when I’m down there….’ He said, ‘I can’t promise, but if I feel well enough I will.’ And I could tell that morning he really didn’t feel well, but he said he would do it. So we went over to the little studio he has in the woods.”
As her father learned the song, Rosanne says, his energy started to perk up. “He was getting into doing it,” she recalled, smiling. “And then he was calling for more takes: ‘No, let me try that part again!’ When we finished, I said, ‘Dad, it’s beautiful, you sound great.’”
“It was a very moving experience,” Rosanne says now. “I was actually crying in the studio.” Her dad, of course, later told her, “You know, I really could have done it better.”

In 1969, James Brown released Gettin’ Down To It, an album recorded with the Dee Felice Trio – the album was a departure for Brown, showcasing a quiter, more introspective side of the Godfather of Soul. The LP’s opening track was a cover of Bobby Hebb’s already iconic “Sunny” – but unlike the countless covers that had been released following Hebb’s ’66 original, Brown re-imagined the tune as a down-tempo duet (with Marva Whitney)… to stunning results.
According to BMI, “Sunny” has generated more than 7 million performances, making it one of the performing rights organization’s all-time most performed songs. A blog devoted to Hebb’s masterpiece – OneSoTrue – lists 656 known covers of the song, from the classic (Wilson Picket) to the bizarre (Leonard Nimoy). Since the blog’s last update we know of a few more – new versions by the Old 97′s Rhett Miller, and the Dap Kings featuring Lee FIelds among them.
“Sunny” was a staple of Brown’s live shows at the time – watch the master at work in this spellbinding live performance from 1971. There will never be another James Brown.

Jill Sobule - I've Got Your Number
Written by Cy Coleman & Carolyn Leigh for the hit 1962 musical Little Me starring Sid Caesar (nominated for 10 Tony’s, one win for the legendary Bob Fosse). Tony Bennett and Peggy Lee were buddies with Cy and both had hit pop versions of the song the following year; Ella Fitzgerald also had considerable success with it in 1966.
This version features the lovely and always awesome Jill Sobule on vocals, Benmont Tench of the Heartbreakers on keys, Jay Bellerose on drums and an arrangement by producer Dave Palmer. Jill’s recording appears on The Best is Yet To Come: The Songs of Cy Coleman

Aja West featuring Reggie Watts - Penny in a Fountain
Before Reggie Watts became a YouTube sensation and Conan’s favorite stand-up comedian, he was vocalist/synth-man of the Seattle groove band Maktub. And on 2007’s Total Recall 2012 by Aja West & Friends, Watts was a principal friend and contributor on the album. Our man Aja West keeps his space jazz at bay and instead flexes his songwriting chops on songs like “Penny in a Fountain,” heard here in all its funky, synth-laden glory.

Sam Phillips - I Need Love
Martinis and Bikinis, Sam Phillips’ mid-90s Grammy-nominated masterwork, is a key record in the evolution of one of America’s most exceptional and unpredictable songwriters. Initially praised as a record that “revitalized the ‘Beatlesque’ category with substantial songwriting and a woman’s voice, which turns the whole sound upside down,” Martinis was universally hailed as a musical turning point for Phillips and tagged by numerous critics as one of the best albums of the year. The disc, produced by long-time collaborator T Bone Burnett, spawned two alternative radio and video hits in “I Need Love” and “Baby I Can’t Please You,” and gained Sam a new legion of devoted followers. It does not get better than this…

Sammy Davis Jr - If My Friends Could See Me Now
1966 saw the debut of the iconic hit musical “Sweet Charity” on Broadway: Combining the music of Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields, the direction and choreography of the legendary Bob Fosse, and a book written by Neil Simon, “Charity” literally reinvented the look and sound of contemporary musical theatre. Of the many standards that came out of the play, “If My Friends Could See Me Now” remains one of musical theater’s most hummable classics. Originally immortalized by Gwen Verdon in the play and original cast record (and later by the star of the film adaptation, Shirley Maclaine), “Friends” had been covered by a select few over the years: Pearl Bailey and Dr John both put their stamps on unique covers; Curtis Mayfield produced a cover by Linda Clifford in 1978 which reached #1 on the Disco chart. But here we present you with Sammy Davis Jr’s defining take from 1969… cool, swingin’ and sung as only Sammy could.

Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris - Western Wall
In 1999, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris and legendary producer Glyn Johns (The Who, The Beatles, The Clash) took over a house on the property of the historic Arizona Inn in Tucson and assembled a makeshift studio to record their genre-bending Western Wall: The Tucson Sessions. The trio assembled a studio band which included Neil Young, Andy Fairweather Low, Ethan Johns, Bernie Leadon, and Kate & Anna McGarrigle, among others – and the ladies chose material by such diverse songwriters as Sinead O’Connor, Patty Griffin, Bruce Springsteen, Leonard Cohen, Luscious Jackson’s Jill Cunniff, Andy Prieboy, and Jackson Browne. Amidst all these amazing songs, the musical centerpiece of this adventurous project proved to be Rosanne Cash’s breathtaking “Western Wall.” Originally cut for Rosanne’s wonderfully sparse 1996 10 Song Demo album – and later re-recorded in fuller form on 2003′s Rules of Travel – Western Wall’s eerily hopeful lyrics proved a perfect vehicle for the duo’s angelic harmonies. A classic.

Chico Mann - Ya Yo Sé
Drenched in warm synthesizers and Spanish lyrics, Chico Mann’s “Ya Yo Sé” is a sly nod to the genre of freestyle, the underground Latin dance music of the ’80s. Born in New York City, Chico Mann (aka Marcos García) was immersed in not only the electro beats of New York and Miami, but also the rich musical tradition of Cuba that courses through his veins. Proficient on guitar and keyboards, Chico Mann found a new groove while playing in the Brooklyn Afrobeat band Antibalas. Now, as Chico Mann, he assembles all of his influences into a tight, fresh fusion. “I’m employing several dialects to make a larger musical statement,” he says. “They’re all branches of the same tree.”
“Chico Mann finished the showcase with far-reaching, utterly danceable electronica… The songs, in Spanish, swept through a 1970s African diaspora—stop-start funk, Afro-Cuban Santeria rhythms…Miami disco, early hip-hop thuds and claps—to dissolve decades, along with borders.” –Jon Pareles, The New York Times

Nikka Costa - The Rules of the Road
First recorded by Nat King Cole in 1961, “The Rules of the Road” remains one of the most beloved tunes in the Notable catalog. Co-written by the legendary team of Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh, the sultry “Rules” has been covered over the years by such luminaries as Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Shirley Horn, Lena Horn, Bobby Short, Buddy Greco, and Anita O’Day. In 2009 Nikka Costa recorded this soulful reading of the tune for the tribute album “The Best Is Yet To Come: The Songs of Cy Coleman” – instantly making it her own.

Adrian Younge and the Black Dynamite Sound Orchestra - Shot Me in the Heart
Adrian Younge approaches R&B like a hip-hop producer (even banging out rough drafts on his MPC). Wearing his influences like a badge, the songwriter/producer weaves together sly psych-rock freak-outs, slick soul melodies, and wicked breaks waiting to be sampled, referencing the past while actualizing something fresh. Originally written for the Black Dynamite soundtrack, “Shot Me in the Heart” now stands on its own merits. Younge’s new album is coming out this year on Wax Poetics Records.

Sam Phillips - When I'm A Camera
This past week Sam Phillips released the final phase of her ambitious year-long Long Play project – the stunning full-legnth album Cameras in the Sky. The Long Play – a music and art installation on the web which provided members five EPs and a full-legnth album (along with a smattering of bonus tracks and other exclusive content) – was universally hailed by the press and embraced by fans. The digital release of Cameras in the Sky concludes this wonderful project… ”Phillips has thrown open a virtual door to her creative world,” wrote the LA Times, “inviting in fans over the course of a year to watch and participate as she writes and records a new album.” For the time being, The Long Play will remain open for business – allowing any new subscribers full access to all the content created during the past year.
We are especially proud to present to you one of our personal favorites from the new record, “When I’m a Camera”… we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
COMING LATER THIS YEAR: Sam is finishing Pretty Time Bomb, a conventionally (digital and physical formats) released second album of all-new material. Sam fans rejoice! We will most likely never see this much material released in such a short time span again! We’re very, very happy.

Cy Coleman - Playboy's Theme
The soundtrack to ’50s/’60s swingin’ bachelor pad cool…
In the late 1950s, Cy Coleman opened the Playroom, his own nightclub located in midtown NYC. The Playroom quickly became a hangout for the New York celebrity crowd (gents like William Holden and Jackie Gleason were regulars) and the Broadway elite. A frequent patron was none other than Hugh Hefner, who quickly struck up a friendship with Coleman, a bond that would last until Cy’s passing in 2004. At the time, Hef was about to debut his now-iconic television show, Playboy After Dark, and tapped Cy to write the theme, which would go on to become one of the generation’s defining instrumentals and Cy’s biggest hit as a performer. Cy frequently appeared on the program over the years — here’s Cy’s first appearance from October 1959, performing “Witchcraft” (a Top 10 hit for Sinatra).
Put on your smoking jacket and slippers, mix yourself a dry martini, and crank the hi-fi for a little “Playboy’s Theme.”

Bettye LaVette - On The Surface
This week’s Top Tune is legendary soul belter Bettye LaVette’s inspired cover of Rosanne Cash’s “On the Surface.” After years of recording and performing, LaVette returned to the mainstream public eye by signing with the always adventurous Anti- Records in the mid-’90s and releasing I’ve Got My Own Hell To Raise, an album of covers that dominated critics’ “Best Of” lists for the year. Her interpretation of this track is exhilarating, as she wraps her unmistakable vocals around Rosanne’s words and melody to transform the song into a classic Bettye Levette standard.
Lovingly produced by Joe Henry, I’ve Got My Own Hell To Raise remains a blueprint for a true modern soul classic.

Alice Clark - Charms Of The Arms Of Love
Alice Clark’s self-titled 1972 debut album is frequently dubbed “the Holy Grail of modern soul”… a brilliant work that quickly faded into criminal obscurity and remained out of print for years. Clark – whose whereabouts following these recordings seem to be shrouded in a bit of mystery – only recorded three sessions that produced two singles and the one album. The disc – highly prized among hardcore R&B enthusiasts – is an amazing soul collection that matches Clark’s distinctive powerhouse voice with impeccable song selection (her reading of Jimmy Webb’s “I Keep It Hid” is required listening). Recently this masterpiece has been lovingly re-released on vinyl, cd and digitally, and is finding her a much-deserved international cult audience. Bobby Hebb had three of his tunes cut on this disc, including “Charms Of The Arms Of Love,” which opens side 2, and is undeniably one of the musical centerpieces of the project.

Tony Bennett - Firefly
In the late 1950′s, Cy Coleman and his collaborator, Carolyn Leigh, were making a pitch to write the score for the musical “Gypsy” and composed the song “Firefly” for one of the characters… and although they didn’t wind up writing the musical (Julie Styne and Stephen Sondheim eventually penned the tunes), “Firefly” caught the attention of Tony Bennett (who had not yet hit big with Cy’s “Best Is Yet To Come”). A groovy uptempo tune that is perfect for that Scorcese-esque mob flick that you’re supervising… and it’s also playful enough to be performed with Kermit and the Muppets (watch video).
“Firefly” was originally released on the legendary 1958 release “Tony Bennett & Count Basie: In Person” – a jazz/pop crossover masterpiece.

Fiona Apple - Why Try To Change Me Now
Happy New Year and welcome to a special Wednesday edition of Notable’s Top Tune of the Week…
We are very exited to let you know that we have just re-released our 2009 tribute album to Cy Coleman digitally through the good people at IODA. So, as of today, you should find the album available wherever fine digital music is sold (iTunes, Amazon, etc). “The Best Is Yet To Come: The Songs of Coleman” features performances by a variety of today’s most compelling female vocalists, including Patty Griffin, Sam Phillips, Nikka Costa, Jill Sobule, Madeleine Peyroux, Missy Higgins and more – lovingly produced by the talented Dave Palmer.
“Why Try To Change Me Now” was Cy Coleman’s first major cut and hit… recorded by some crooner named Frank Sinatra. Over the years such diverse luminaries as Sammy Davis Jr with Count Basie, Brook Benton, and Elvin Jones have recorded beautifully unique interpretations of this classic song. Fiona’s recent reading absolutely floors anyone who listens, and she tackles the tune in a way that truly makes it her own. Apple’s vocals, as per usual, are stunning – that mix of vulnerability and confidence that only she can exude. We are honored that she chose to cut this and another Cy classic (“I Walk A Little Faster”) for the tribute project.

Bobby Hebb - Sunny
Today we’re pleased to present one of the all time great American pop/soul classics: Bobby Hebb’s timeless “Sunny.” Easily one of the most covered modern American standards (everyone from James Brown to Marvin Gaye to Wilson Pickett have recorded classic versions; the Old 97′s Rhett Miller and the Dap Kings with Lee FIelds have each recorded stellar recent pop and soul interpretations, respectively), “Sunny” is a tune that immediately brings a smile to the face – instantly recognizable and impossible not to sing along to. According to BMI, “Sunny” has generated more than 7 million performances, making it one of the performing rights organization’s all-time most performed songs. BMI proclaims the tune as “a bonafide entry into the great American Songbook” – we couldn’t agree more.

Rosanne Cash - Dreams Are Not My Home
“Dreams Are Not My Home” is a personal favorite from Rosanne Cash’s brilliant 2006 Capitol Records release, Black Cadillac – this uptempo number is fueled with more hooks than a weekend fishing party and lyrics that cut to the bone: “The waves are breaking on the wall/The queen of roses spreads her arms to fly, she falls/If i had wings I’d cut them down/And live without these dreams/So I could learn to love the ground”. Black Cadillac was universally hailed by critics as a milestone in an already illustrious career: Newsweek called it “not just the best album she’s made in a long time. This is the best album she’s ever made”; Rolling Stone praised the disc as Rosanne’s “best and darkest since the intimate noir of 1990’s Interiors”.
