Adrian Younge Presents Venice Dawn - It's Me

Following up his score for the cult-classic film Black Dynamite, composer Adrian Younge envisioned a new sound that would revisit his earlier, more baroque instrumental work of Venice Dawn and mesh it with the deep, gritty soul of Black Dynamite, eventually deciding to bring everything full circle by releasing the material under the moniker Venice Dawn. This new LP, titled Something About April, is a dark, heavy mix of psychedelic soul and cinematic instrumentals with hip-hop aesthetics, touching on influences from Ennio Morricone to Air, Portishead to King Crimson, RZA to Otis Redding.

The first single on Wax Poetics Records, “It’s Me” featuring guest singer-songwriter Rebecca Jordan, exhibits classic production techniques and authentic instrumentation, recalling the glory days of ’70s R&B, while the vocal workout and swagger allow the music to sit firmly with modern artists who redefine soul music like Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill. Some say it’s a mix between Aretha Franklin circa 1969 and Wu-Tang Clan circa 1992.

Something About April was released digitally on Nov. 8, 2011. The CD will drop on Nov. 29, followed by a limited-edition vinyl release on Dec. 13.
