1966 saw the debut of the iconic hit musical “Sweet Charity” on Broadway: Combining the music of Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields, the direction and choreography of the legendary Bob Fosse, and a book written by Neil Simon, “Charity” literally reinvented the look and sound of contemporary musical theatre. Of the many standards that came out of the play, “Big Spender” remains one of musical theater’s most memorable classics. Originally immortalized in the play and original cast record (and later by Fosse’s classic sequence in the film), “Big Spender” had been covered by a very diverse group over the years: from Shirley Bassey to Queen, Bette Midler to Chaka Khan, and so on. Our own Sam Phillips has just cut the tune for an upcoming Sweet Relief charity release, due out later this year.
But for today’s Top Tune we present you with Peggy Lee’s classic take from 1966… dig.
