Sass developed her musical chops along side the seminal figures of jazz. Starting out singing in bands with Earl Hines and Billy Eckstine, Vaughan helped put 52nd street (Swing Street) on the map. Her band mates included giants Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charlie Parker. She enjoyed two successful decades on Mercury Records during the 50′s and 60′s including one final set for the label, Sassy Swings Again in 1967.
On this album, Sarah joins an all-star band including the likes of Clark Terry, Freddie Hubbard, Phil Woods, and Benny Golson on this week’s Top Tune: Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh‘s “On the Other Side of the Tracks”. The performances and album, which was awarded four stars by Stephen Cook, are described as an essential session during her “autumnal prime”. This song was cleverly plucked from the hit musical, Little Me, a Cy Coleman/Carolyn Leigh tuner from 1962 which starred Sid Caesar and received 10 Tony nominations. The musical has been seen many award-winning revivals since it’s Broadway debut, you can catch the latest incarnation starting today May 1 and running through May 19 at the Eureka Theatre, San Francisco starring Jason Graae.
