This week’s Top Tune was recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama under the spiritual influence of the “Singing River”. For an intensely joyful peek into the power of that place, you might want to head out to a theater near you (hopefully) right now to catch the brilliant documentary film, Muscle Shoals.
Recorded at Rick Hall’s, Fame Studios in October of 1966, the great Wilson Pickett along with one of the greatest studio bands of all time, The Swampers (Aretha Franklin, Percy Sledge, Arthur Alexander), took their turn at Bobby Hebb‘s smash hit “Sunny“. This all went off during the same incredible period that would produce Pickett’s “Mustang Sally” and while Hebb himself was enjoying a #2 chart position in the U.S. of “Sunny” (#12 U.K.) including a run as the main supporting act for The Beatles on their last U.S. stadium tour.
