Nat King Cole could have and should have introduced this great Cy Coleman & Carolyn Leigh classic tune to the world when it was recorded in November of 1961. But Tony Bennett and Lena Horne got to beat him to it when Capitol Records decided to hold the release of the breathtaking Billy May-arranged lp, Let’s Face The Music!, until 1964.
Fans eventually reveled in a double-dose of Cole’s trademark soft, romantic delivery combined with May’s explosively punchy jazz orchestrations. Cole after all had his roots set deeply in jazz and May was said to have a sentimental streak a mile wide. The end result is a joy to hear in this sarcastic & slangy ode to the winding roads of romance.
