This week’s Top Tune features the iconic ballad, “Our Private World” from the 1978 multiple award-winning musical, On the Twentieth Century. Part operetta, part farce, part screwball comedy, the musical was directed by Hal Prince and is an adaptation of Twentieth Century, the 1932 play by Ben Hecht. The 1934 film version directed by Howard Hawks and starring John Barrymore and Carole Lombard is a classic. Lyricist/librettists Betty Comden and Adolph Green transfer much of its tone to the musical which was composed by Cy Coleman. Coleman originally turned down the offer to compose the score: “I didn’t want to do twenties pastiche, there was too much of that around,” he recalled. “But when I realized the main characters had these larger-than-life personalities, I thought – ah, comic opera!”. The musical made a star out of Judy Kaye and played for 449 performances. The cast featured Madeline Kahn (shortly replaced by Judy Kaye), John Cullum, Imogene Coca, and Kevin Kline. The show won Tony awards for Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Performance by a Leading Actor (John Cullum), Best Performance by a Featured Actor (Kevin Kline) and Best Scenic Design (Robin Wagner).
In February 2015, the illustrious Roundabout Theatre Company will launch the first Broadway revival of the show which will star Tony winner Kristin Chenoweth (Wicked, Promises, Promises) as the Hollywood diva Lily Garland opposite Golden Globe winner Peter Gallagher (The Country Girl, Guys and Dolls, Sex, Lies and Videotape) as her former lover; the bankrupt theater producer, Oscar Jaffee. The revival will begin previews on Feb 12, 2015 at the American Airlines Theatre with an official opening on March 12 running through July 5th. Scott Ellis will direct, Warren Carlyle will be the choreographer. Not to be missed!
