This week’s Top Tune comes from the newest members of the Notable family, the grungy riot grrrl excellence of Oklahoma-based duo Skating Polly. The group is comprised of sister duo Kelli Mayo (14) and Peyton Bighorse (19) who at a very young age have already shared stages and collaborated on albums with the likes of Exene Cevenka of X (who produced their sophomore album), Kliph Scurlock of The Flaming Lips, Calvin Johnson of Beat Happening, Mike Watt, Deerhoof, and Band of Horses.
“Alabama Movies” is the lead song from the new album Fuzz Steilacoom and was recorded at Dub Narcotic Studios in Olympia, WA and at Hook Echo Sound in Norman, OK. You can hear and watch the duo in all of their explosive & fuzzy ugly-pop glory in the amazing video for the track HERE.
Compared in sound to a younger Savages or a new age Bikini Kill, the sisters have been influenced by large doses of ’70′s punk rock and early-’90s alt-rock and mine inspiration from artists ranging from Johnny Cash and the Beatles, to NWA and Regina Spektor. The Riot Grrrl movement is a strong influence on this album’s creation with plenty of playfully aggression-fueled performances but also showcases Skating Polly’s sensitive and melodic side on poignant tracks like, “A Little Late”. You can hear much of the album being spun currently by legendary Los Angeles DJ, Rodney Bingenheimer on KROQ‘s Rodney on the Roq show (a dream come true for the band).
Do yourself a favor and catch this duo live in concert, you won’t regret it!
