One year ago this week two worlds collided.
“Tandem versions of Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Cy Coleman emphasize the swing in the songs. Gaga has a blast bending the notes in the Gershwins’ “They All Laughed” or running the scales with madcap abandon in Coleman’s ‘Firefly’.” – NY Daily News
Tony Bennett would break his own record for the oldest artist to achieve a number one spot at the top of the charts when Cheek to Cheek debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200. For Lady Gaga, it was her third consecutive number-one album in the US.
The televised concert titled Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga: Cheek to Cheek Live!, aired in October 2014. Two number one singles on Billboard’s Jazz Songs Chart and a sold out international tour propelled the album to Gold status in the US and a big Grammy win for Best Traditonal Pop Vocal Album. The collaborative jazz project would go on to reach the top ten in the UK, Canada, Japan, Australia, and Greece.
A 37-date US tour began in December in Las Vegas and gradually expanded into a much larger run, playing New York City’s Radio City Music Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, L.A. and recently concluded with two final dates in Washington D.C. at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall on July 31 & August 1. It was a joyful collaboration from the unified pair which exuded camaraderie and a mutual respect for each other and for the musicians who so deftly keep the legacy of the Great American Songbook alive & swinging!
