In 1999, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris and legendary producer Glyn Johns (The Who, The Beatles, The Clash) took over a house on the property of the historic Arizona Inn in Tucson and assembled a makeshift studio to record their genre-bending Western Wall: The Tucson Sessions. The trio assembled a studio band which included Neil Young, Andy Fairweather Low, Ethan Johns, Bernie Leadon, and Kate & Anna McGarrigle, among others – and the ladies chose material by such diverse songwriters as Sinead O’Connor, Patty Griffin, Bruce Springsteen, Leonard Cohen, Luscious Jackson’s Jill Cunniff, Andy Prieboy, and Jackson Browne. Amidst all these amazing songs, the musical centerpiece of this adventurous project proved to be Rosanne Cash‘s breathtaking “Western Wall.” Originally cut for Rosanne’s wonderfully sparse 1996 10 Song Demo album – and later re-recorded in fuller form on 2003′s Rules of Travel. Western Wall’s eerily hopeful lyrics proved a perfect vehicle for the duo’s angelic harmonies. A classic.
